NBA Star Ja Morant Expected for Thrilling London Showdown

Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant was notably absent from Thursday's opening game of the NBA Europe series against the Orlando Magic in Berlin, sidelined by a right calf issue. Despite his absence from the court, Morant was present with his team in Berlin, with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressing optimism about the two-time All-Star's potential participation in the series' second game, scheduled for Sunday in London.
Commissioner Silver acknowledged Morant's significant global following and voiced his disappointment regarding the guard's inability to play in Thursday's match. However, he maintained hope for Morant's return for the London fixture, stating, "I know he has a tremendous following globally... I'm still holding out hope he'll be able to play when we're in London on Sunday."
Morant's absence on Thursday was anticipated, as teams typically release injury reports a day prior to games. This protocol suggests that Saturday is the most probable day for the Grizzlies to issue an update on Morant's availability for the upcoming London game. The star guard's current health status adds another layer to ongoing discussions surrounding his career, particularly amidst swirling trade speculation.
The Memphis Grizzlies entered Thursday's game with a 17-22 record, placing them 10th in the Western Conference and seven games shy of the sixth spot, which guarantees a playoff berth. Morant himself has remained tight-lipped about his trade status and future with the Memphis franchise, having sidestepped questions regarding these matters on Wednesday.
Financially, Morant is currently in the third year of a lucrative five-year, $197.2 million contract, earning approximately $39.4 million this season. On the court, he has been averaging 19 points and 7.6 assists per game this season, contributing to career averages of 22.4 points and 7.4 assists per game.
