NBA Season Heats Up: Spurs, Thunder Neck-and-Neck for Championship, Wemby Eyes MVP!

As the 2026-27 NBA season commences, anticipation is high for the league's top contenders, particularly the Western Conference finalists from the previous season. The San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder have emerged as the clear favorites to claim the NBA Finals title, currently tied atop the odds board at +270.

Following these Western Conference powerhouses, the reigning champions, the New York Knicks, are positioned at +900. They share these odds with the significantly revamped Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers have made headlines with dramatic shifts in their championship odds throughout the offseason. Initially starting at 60-1, their odds improved to 20-1 after successfully acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics, who themselves hold odds of 13-1. A monumental signing of LeBron James further propelled the 76ers' odds to their current +900, cementing their status as a major threat.

Beyond the leading contenders, several other teams have made notable moves to enhance their prospects. The Cleveland Cavaliers, for instance, distinguished themselves from a larger group of teams at 25-1, improving their odds to 22-1. Similarly, the Houston Rockets made a significant jump over the summer, shortening their odds from 50-1 to 35-1. In a testament to the league's growing competitiveness, almost half of the NBA's 30 teams—a total of 14—will begin the 2026-27 season with championship odds of 40-1 or shorter, according to DraftKings.

In addition to the team championship, the race for the Regular Season MVP award is also shaping up to be fiercely contested, with a strong field of elite players. Victor Wembanyama leads the MVP odds at an impressive +205, reflecting expectations for a dominant season. Close behind is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at +380, followed by Luka Doncic at +475 and Nikola Jokic at +650, all recognized for their consistent high-level performance.

The list of MVP contenders extends further, featuring Jayson Tatum at 12-1, Giannis Antetokounmpo at 14-1, and Anthony Edwards at 16-1. Other notable players with longer odds but still considered impactful include Cade Cunningham at 30-1, Jalen Brunson at 50-1, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown both at 90-1, and Donovan Mitchell at 100-1. Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Booker, Stephen Curry, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, Paolo Banchero, and Cooper Flagg complete the extensive list of players whose performances will be closely watched throughout the season, each with varying odds reflecting their potential impact.
