He passed away on May 12 at the age of 47 due to a brain tumor, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and advocacy.

Beyond his pivotal role in LGBTQ+ visibility within professional athletics, Collins also openly shared his personal battle with cancer. Before his death, he publicly detailed his cancer journey and discussed his prognosis, driven by a hope to foster greater understanding and offer support to others confronting similar diagnoses. His willingness to be vulnerable and champion important causes exemplifies the spirit of the Arthur Ashe Award, which recognizes individuals who have made a significant difference beyond the realm of sports by fighting for their convictions.

The esteemed award will be accepted on Collins' behalf by his twin brother, Jarron Collins. In a poignant statement, Jarron expressed, "It is profoundly bittersweet but deeply meaningful to accept the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage on my brother's behalf, celebrating a legacy of visibility, strength, and love that will endure forever." Jason Collins joins a distinguished list of past recipients, including the USA Gymnastics sexual abuse survivors, NBA player Kevin Love, the U.S. Women's national soccer team, former NFL player Steve Gleason, and NBA Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson.
