ESPN Launches NBA Trade Lab, Letting Fans Build and Vote on Mock Trades

ESPN Digital has launched the NBA Trade Lab, an interactive web application that allows basketball fans to create, save, share, and vote on mock NBA trades. The tool expands the experience offered by ESPN’s existing NBA Trade Machine by giving users a platform to build hypothetical deals and assess how other fans view their potential value.

Its central feature, the Trade Builder, enables users to construct personalised trades and check them against current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) rules, helping ensure proposed deals comply with NBA salary and transaction regulations. Users can then submit their trades for community voting.

The platform includes a Trade Swiper, which lets fans evaluate proposed deals involving their chosen team by swiping right to accept or left to reject them. A Trade Viewer ranks submitted trades according to the highest mutual acceptance rate among the teams involved, offering a snapshot of fan opinion on potential player acquisitions.

The Trade Builder’s Auto-Complete Trade feature can generate a random, CBA-valid deal by completing an existing proposal with players or draft picks or creating a new trade from scratch. Users can also access a player’s Net Points Profile by selecting their card, while the Multiteam Deals feature simplifies trades involving three or more teams by focusing on the players and assets their selected team would send and receive.

ESPN Trade Lab also includes an Archived Trades system that removes proposals from active voting when subsequent real-world transactions make them invalid or when voting indicates that a deal is significantly unbalanced. A Salary Cap and Apron Glossary explains key CBA terminology, while a dedicated feedback button allows users to report bugs and potential rule inconsistencies.

ESPN Insider Bobby Marks maintains the salary and contract data daily, although changes to contracts and CBA rules may affect a trade’s validity. All proposals and votes are fan-generated and do not represent official team plans, confirmed transactions or ESPN reporting of actual deals.
