NBA Coaching Legend Steve Kerr Ponders Future: 'Expiration Date' Looms for Warriors?

Longtime Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has acknowledged that his tenure with the franchise might be nearing an end following their elimination from the play-in tournament. After the Warriors' 111-96 loss to the Phoenix Suns, Kerr stated, "I don't know what's going to happen," adding that while he still loves coaching, he understands that "these jobs all have an expiration date." He plans to take a week or two to contemplate his future before discussing it with controlling owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy.
Kerr, whose contract is expiring, deliberately did not seek an extension before this season, postponing discussions about his future until after the team's elimination. He expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to coach the Warriors, including players like Steph Curry and Draymond Green, should his time conclude. He emphasized the need for everyone to step away and reconvene.
In his 12 seasons as head coach, Kerr led the Warriors to four NBA titles (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022), establishing one of the league's most memorable dynasties. However, the team's core has aged, transitioning from a perennial contender to a fringe playoff team. In recent seasons, they've struggled to advance past the second round, recording 44, 46, 48, and 37 regular-season wins since their last championship.
This past season was particularly challenging, marked by injuries to star wing Jimmy Butler III (ACL tear) and Steph Curry (27 games missed due to a persistent right knee issue). These setbacks contributed to the Warriors' 37-45 record, leading to a 10-seed finish and a season-ending loss to the Suns. In an emotional moment during the final seconds of the play-in game, Kerr subbed out Curry and Green, sharing a heartfelt conversation and a hug, telling them, "I don't know what's going to happen next, but I love you guys to death. Thank you."
The future of key players also remains a topic of discussion. Draymond Green, finishing his 14th NBA season, has a $27.6 million player option for next season and reiterated his desire to remain with the Warriors despite being mentioned in trade deadline talks. Steph Curry, 38, still an All-Star-caliber player, has one season and $62.6 million remaining on his contract. He confirmed his interest in discussing an extension this summer, envisioning several more seasons in his career.
Curry expressed his preference for Kerr to remain as coach, stating, "I want Coach to be happy. I want him to be excited for the job. I want him to believe he's the right guy for the job." Kerr acknowledged that his partnership with Curry would influence his decision, asserting, "I don't want to walk away from Steph. I'm definitely not going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA. I would never walk away from Steph. But all this stuff has to be aligned and right. Those are all discussions that will be had."
