For the Minnesota Timberwolves, the acquisition of Cody Williams, the highly touted No. 10 pick from the 2024 NBA Draft, represents a key addition to their roster for the future. Alongside Williams, the Timberwolves also brought in John Konchar. Sources close to ESPN indicated that Minnesota intends to keep Williams and strategically waive-and-stretch Konchar. This decision was made on the final day permitted to waive a player and stretch their guaranteed salary over multiple seasons, a move that will provide the Timberwolves with enhanced apron flexibility throughout the upcoming season. Konchar's guaranteed salary of $2.05 million will be spread across three consecutive years, further optimizing Minnesota's financial position and enabling them to sign a 15th player.
A primary driver behind the Timberwolves' decision to trade Josh Green was to create the necessary salary space to finalize the signing of forward Jonathan Kuminga. Minnesota had engaged in multiple trade discussions for Green to facilitate this acquisition. By moving Green's $14.7 million deal, the Timberwolves successfully generated the financial capacity required to sign Kuminga to a two-year, $12.4 million contract utilizing the taxpayer midlevel exception.
