In vitro fertilization (IVF) can significantly impact couples, extending beyond financial burdens to emotional and physical challenges. A Maven Clinic study of 1,000 women revealed that while 85% felt supported by their partners, 65% felt the burden of fertility treatment fell disproportionately on them. The study also highlighted that 46% were unprepared for unexpected costs, 59% took on extra work to afford treatment, and over half experienced negative impacts on their relationship, with 11% ending their relationship due to fertility struggles. Mental health challenges were common, affecting social interactions and career growth.
Finances are a major stressor, with partners often having different comfort levels regarding financial risk. Women, with a tighter fertility window, may be more willing to incur financial hardship than their male partners. Unbalanced financial contributions can create further division. Claire Tomkins, CEO of Future Family, emphasizes that the financial aspect is often the most stressful part of the IVF process.
The emotional toll of fertility treatment can also divide couples. Disagreements can arise over ethical concerns, hormonal treatments, and when to stop pursuing treatment. One partner may feel emotionally spent, while the other clings to hope, leading to misunderstandings. Differing opinions on alternatives like adoption or donor gametes can also create tension. How individuals handle the challenges of infertility can be a major point of contention, especially when one partner internalizes their thoughts or doubts.
Experts recommend open communication to avoid disagreements. Partners should discuss important issues and find compromises, acknowledging emotions and supporting each other. Supporting the partner undergoing procedures involves attending appointments, sharing household responsibilities, handling logistics, acknowledging emotions, checking in regularly, protecting them from intrusive questions, and respecting privacy boundaries.
Marcy Maguire, MD, emphasizes the importance of ensuring the partner doesn't feel alone. Both partners should prioritize their mental well-being, seeking professional help if needed. Neel Shah, MD, FACOG, notes that an infertility diagnosis can be as emotionally devastating as a cancer diagnosis, and mental health support is often an afterthought.
While fertility treatments can test relationships, they can also lead to growth and strength. Experts have witnessed couples emerging stronger from the process.
In Georgia, Adriana Smith's case highlights the complexities of abortion laws. Smith, a 30-year-old brain-dead pregnant woman, was kept on a ventilator due to Georgia’s abortion laws, which forbid abortion if fetal cardiac activity is detected. Smith's family had no say in the matter, despite the emotional anguish and concerns about the unborn child's health and mounting medical bills.
Georgia’s Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act, or the “heartbeat bill,” signed into law in 2019, does not provide exceptions for Smith’s situation, as her life is no longer at risk. The situation has drawn comparisons to The Handmaid’s Tale, reflecting concerns about reproductive rights. Smith is not the first woman to be kept artificially alive to give birth; similar cases have occurred in Nebraska, British Columbia, Texas, and Brazil.
Mild itching during pregnancy is a common symptom resulting from hormonal changes and skin stretching. Itchiness often occurs around the abdomen and breasts, especially with dry skin. While usually harmless, it can sometimes indicate an underlying medical condition. Vaginal itching may suggest an infection, while anal itching may be due to haemorrhoids.
Common causes of itching during pregnancy include eczema, prurigo of pregnancy, cholestasis, polymorphic eruption of pregnancy, and pemphigoid gestationis. Scratching to relieve itching can cause stretch marks. To treat constant itching, stay hydrated, use light oil massages, towel dry gently, and use mild detergents.
Severe itching at night should be evaluated by a doctor. The myth that itching indicates the baby’s gender is false. Itchy legs can result from clothing or underlying conditions like diabetes. Home remedies include cold packs, moisturizers, staying hydrated, natural fabrics, avoiding fragrances and hot showers, and using aloe vera. If these measures are insufficient, consult a doctor for topical or oral medication.
