Nasarawa Guber Shocker: Ex-IGP Challenges, Ex-NPHCDA Boss Backs Wadada

The political landscape of Nasarawa State's 2027 governorship race within the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been marked by significant developments, including high-profile withdrawals, strategic endorsements, and new entrants. Dr. Faisal Shuaib, the former Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and a prominent governorship aspirant, initially announced his formal withdrawal from the contest. This decision, made amid alleged pressure from party stakeholders, followed intensive consultations with his supporters across the state, and was presented as an exercise in integrity and responsibility.

Speaking at a press conference in Lafia, Dr. Shuaib explained his commitment to supporting Governor Abdullahi Sule’s preferred candidate, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada. He emphasized that his pledge, though difficult, must be honored. Drawing on his experience in the health sector, Shuaib articulated that public service often involves quiet, persistent effort rather than seeking the loudest voice. He formally withdrew from the APC gubernatorial ticket, pledging his full weight, structure, and conviction behind Senator Wadada, and urged his supporters to rally around the governor’s choice to advance the state.

His withdrawal, which came shortly after a well-attended mega rally where supporters braved heavy rain, triggered emotional scenes among his loyalists. However, this initial decision did not signal a definitive end to his political aspirations for some. Aggrieved stakeholders and supporters from the Southern Senatorial Zone of Nasarawa State swiftly urged Dr. Shuaib not to abandon his 2027 ambition. At a subsequent mega rally held in his support in Lafia, notable stakeholder Abdullahi Magaji asserted that Governor Sule's endorsement of an aspirant should not deter others from contesting the governorship position in 2027.

Magaji and other supporters reiterated their full backing for Shuaib, citing his impressive track record in politics and governance. They also commended the APC leadership for adopting direct primary elections, viewing it as a move to return power to the people, eliminate fears of candidate imposition, and allow politicians to genuinely test their popularity. Amina Sani, a 76-year-old woman leader, expressed profound confidence in Shuaib's leadership capabilities, urging youths to support competent leaders and highlighting the unconditional love and trust his supporters had, evident in their defiance of torrential rain to attend his events.

Responding to these appeals at an appreciation tour rally, Shuaib acknowledged the outpouring of support and stated, “I have heard your calls. I thank you very sincerely, and I will respond accordingly as soon as possible,” leaving the door open for a potential reconsideration of his withdrawal. This ambiguity further intensified the internal party dynamics.

Adding another layer of complexity to the contest, former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, officially entered the Nasarawa State governorship race. Adamu obtained the APC nomination and expression of interest forms, signaling his intent to challenge for the party’s ticket. His campaign director, Barrister Hussein Musa, expressed strong confidence in Adamu's ability to secure victory, characterizing his entry as a crucial step towards inclusive leadership. Adamu's participation is seen as introducing a new dimension to the already divided APC landscape, especially given the governor's prior endorsement of Wadada.

Meanwhile, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, Governor Sule's preferred successor, has been actively consolidating his position. Currently representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, Wadada previously served as a member of the House of Representatives. In a contrasting development to Shuaib's situation, five other governorship aspirants from the Nasarawa West Senatorial District have stepped down from the race and publicly declared their support for Wadada, further solidifying his standing within his political bloc.

The Nasarawa State APC gubernatorial contest for 2027 is thus shaping up to be a dynamic and multifaceted battle, characterized by a complex interplay of endorsements, withdrawals, potential re-entries, and new aspirants. The adoption of direct primaries is poised to be a pivotal factor, empowering party members to select their preferred candidate amidst a fiercely contested and evolving political environment.
