Nairobi Makes History: First African City to Host World Athletics Championships!
Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking a historic first for an African city. This decision, announced by World Athletics, follows a compelling bid from the Kenyan capital, which aims to accelerate the development of athletics across the continent.
Nairobi, Kenya, has made history by securing the right to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, becoming the first African city ever to stage the global outdoor athletics showpiece. The decision was announced by World Athletics following a Council meeting held in Budapest, Hungary, where the recently concluded Ultimate Championship took place. Nairobi successfully triumphed over bids from prominent cities including London, Munich, and Rome, marking a significant milestone for the continent.
Alongside Nairobi's historic win, World Athletics also confirmed other future host cities. Beijing will host the 2027 edition of the championships, while Munich has been awarded the 2031 championships. World Athletics president Sebastian Coe lauded the competitive nature of the bidding process, which involved four exceptional proposals. Coe expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the championships to Africa for the first time, describing Nairobi's bid as both "compelling and emotional." This decision strategically positions the championships to be held in Asia, Africa, and Europe over three consecutive editions, emphasizing a commitment to global outreach.
Coe underscored the importance of selecting the right host, bid, and circumstances for the championships to come to Africa. While Kenya had previously submitted an unsuccessful bid for the 2025 championships, which were ultimately awarded to Tokyo, the nation boasts a strong track record in hosting major athletics events. Past successes include the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, the 2017 World Under-18 Championships in Nairobi, and the 2021 World Under-20 Championships, also held in the capital. These experiences showcase Kenya's capability and commitment to organizing high-profile international sporting events.
