Naira Marley Breaks Silence on Mohbad's Death, Denies Involvement in Viral Documentary
British-Nigerian musician Azeez Fashola, widely known as Naira Marley and founder of Marlian Records, has finally addressed the controversial death of his former signee, Ilerioluwa Aloba, or Mohbad. Mohbad tragically died on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. This long-awaited public statement was delivered through a YouTube documentary titled "My Side of the Story," aiming to clarify the issues that have surrounded him since Mohbad's passing. Naira Marley's decision to speak out follows a February 2025 Magistrate's Court ruling in Yaba, Lagos, which acquitted him, along with music promoter Samson Balogun (Sam Larry) and Ibrahim Owodunni (Primeboy), of any blame in Mohbad's death. Separately, the Coroner's Court in Ikorodu, established by the state government to investigate the circumstances of the singer's demise, recommended the criminal prosecution of auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe, citing gross negligence for administering an injection without a doctor's prescription, an act deemed both unlawful and professionally negligent.
Naira Marley, who rose to prominence in the Nigerian music scene in 2018, signed Mohbad and Zinoleesky to Marlian Music in 2019. He recounted his discovery of Mohbad's use of an illegal substance, referred to as "Ice," on June 7, 2020. Marley claimed he advised Mohbad about the dangers, to which Mohbad responded that stress led him to it and promised to desist. Naira Marley emphasized that he offered advice and never coerced Mohbad into anything. He further asserted transparency in their financial dealings, stating a 50/50 split of earnings after covering all expenses, a model he presented as fairer than what other record labels offered. He also debunked rumors of Mohbad's fear of hospitals, referencing a WhatsApp chat from November 2020 where Mohbad visited a hospital, and addressed an earlier bank account dispute where Mohbad initially used an account (Adesanya Justina Olajumoke) believed to be linked to his wife Wunmi's family before switching to his own (Aloba Promise).
A significant incident detailed by Naira Marley was the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) raid on Marlian House on February 24, 2022. While Naira Marley was in Sweden, NDLEA officers arrested Zinoleesky, Subomi, and others. Mohbad was also taken after a physical altercation with the officers. Following his release, Mohbad conducted an Instagram Live session "under duress" and, according to Marley, in a "vulnerable state of psychosis," during which he accused Naira Marley and others of endangering his life, explicitly stating, "If I die, everybody na Marlian Music, Naira Marley kill me." He also accused his girl, Wunmi, and Zinoleesky of being a "snitch." Despite these public accusations, Mohbad remained under Marlian Music, and Naira Marley stated that Mohbad, his parents, and his girlfriend Wunmi subsequently apologized for his actions.
After the NDLEA incident, Mohbad ceased living frequently at Marlian House. Naira Marley detailed his efforts to support Mohbad's health, including paying for health checks and medications. He tragically recounted Mohbad's suicide attempt on March 27, 2022, while Naira Marley was in Puerto Rico. Reports indicated Mohbad attempted to jump from a window and had searched online for a deadly insecticide, Sniper. Upon his return to Nigeria, Naira Marley discussed these alarming behaviors with Mohbad and his parents, leading to a collective decision that Mohbad should be taken away for his safety.
The relationship further deteriorated due to a managerial dispute. On October 4, 2022, Mohbad, allegedly intoxicated, confronted and fought his self-chosen manager, Tunde, at Marlian House. Naira Marley intervened to stop the physical altercation. Shortly after this incident, a series of tweets accusing Naira Marley of threatening Mohbad's life circulated online, which Naira Marley suspected were fabricated by someone else given access to Mohbad's phone. On October 7, 2022, Mohbad's lawyer sent a letter to Marlian Music to terminate his contract and requested payment logs. Naira Marley claimed he provided these logs to demonstrate financial transparency. He further alleged that in December 2022, Mohbad withdrew $72,000 from a Digital Service Provider (DSP) partner, money that was not his rightful entitlement. Consequently, Marlian Music held some of Mohbad's royalty payments to recoup this sum. Naira Marley stated that the last time he physically saw Mohbad was on October 4, 2022, the day of the fight with his manager.
On the day of Mohbad's death, September 12, 2023, Naira Marley asserted he was in Amsterdam and later Montenegro with Zinoleesky, learning of Mohbad's passing through social media reports. He lamented the immediate public backlash and accusations that linked him to Mohbad's death, with old videos resurfacing, which he said prevented him from properly mourning. He criticized his two-month detention by the police in Panti, Yaba, Lagos, after he returned to Nigeria to clear his name. In conclusion, Naira Marley affirmed that Mohbad's royalties remain untouched and Marlian Music has contacted his lawyer, ready to hand over the earnings to whomever Mohbad's family or the court designates. He maintained his innocence, stating he never bullied or killed Mohbad, and expressed belief in Sam Larry's similar claims of non-involvement. The documentary also broadened the scope of controversy by making fresh allegations against Mohbad's wife, Zinoleesky, and an unnamed friend, whom he accused of complicity and introducing Mohbad to hard drugs, adding new dimensions to the unresolved circumstances surrounding the late singer's demise.
