Mustapha Gbande denies role in Ablekuma North rerun violence, slams Afenyo-Markin
Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has denied allegations made by Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
According to him, the Member of Parliament accused him of inciting or directing acts of violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun election held on Friday, 11th July, 2025.
In a statement issued on Saturday, July 12, Mr Gbande expressed shock at the Minority Leader’s claims, describing them as “false, reckless, and politically motivated.”
He insisted he had no involvement in or prior knowledge of any violent incidents at the 19 polling stations where the rerun took place.
“I categorically deny any involvement in, or prior knowledge of, any of the incidents he referred to,” Gbande said.
“Such conduct from a trained lawyer and senior member of the legislature reflects a disregard for truth and the ethical standards expected of public office holders.”
Mr Gbande confirmed his presence in the constituency as part of routine electoral monitoring but clarified that he was not at the scene when the altercation involving former MP and Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, broke out.
“When I was called upon, I rushed to the scene to assist with efforts to de-escalate the situation. Contrary to the false narrative, I asked my driver to take Madam Hawa Koomson to the hospital,” he explained.
He condemned all unlawful acts and called for a full and impartial investigation by the Ghana Police Service to ensure that the perpetrators of any wrongdoing are brought to justice.
Mr Gbande also urged the Electoral Commission and relevant authorities to enhance measures that safeguard electoral integrity and protect the dignity of political participants during such exercises.
In response to Mr Afenyo-Markin’s accusations, Mr Gbande disclosed that the matter has been referred to his legal team for advice.
He warned that disinformation and character assassination pose serious threats to democratic discourse.
“It is essential that we preserve a political culture rooted in truth, accountability, and the rule of law,” he noted.
“I remain committed to promoting peace, fair participation, and responsible leadershipvalues that should guide all political actors in our nation.”
He further reaffirmed his continued dedication to his duties, stating he remains undeterred and will carry on with honesty and conviction.
