Music Legend Revealed: Babyface Documentary Promises Intimate Look at an Icon!

The illustrious life and prolific career of 13-time Grammy winner Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds will be the focus of a new documentary, currently in production and financially backed by HarbourView Equity Partners. The film is being directed by Emmy-nominated Chris Moukarbel, known for Gaga: Five Foot Two and Cypher, alongside Kenya Barris, the acclaimed creator of black-ish and grown-ish.
The documentary promises an intimate exploration of Babyface’s journey, featuring in-depth interviews where he candidly discusses the many triumphs and formidable challenges of his music career. It will also examine his meticulous songwriting and production process, showcasing the extensive roster of star collaborators he has worked with over the years, including Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Beyoncé, Eric Clapton, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, and SZA.
Beyond Babyface’s personal reflections, the film will include interviews with key collaborators, offering diverse perspectives on his influence. Audiences can expect exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpses and concert footage from his upcoming performances at The Palms in Las Vegas. A significant portion of the documentary will trace his trajectory as a co-founder of Atlanta-based LaFace Records, established with Antonio “L.A.” Reid in the 1990s and early 2000s. LaFace Records became home to iconic artists such as Toni Braxton, OutKast, Usher, TLC, P!nk, and Ciara.
Reflecting on his career, Babyface said, “I’ve often wondered how an unassuming kid from Indianapolis got to where he is today, working with artists and achieving dreams I could’ve never imagined when I first started. This documentary is giving me a chance to go down memory lane with a fine-tooth comb, reexamining the highs and lows of my life and career. I’m discovering where all the songs really came from and perhaps just as important, the how and why.”
This ‘unassuming kid’ went on to compose and produce seminal film soundtracks and chart-topping songs, including works for The Bodyguard, Boomerang, Soul Food, and Waiting to Exhale, the latter celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Notably, he produced “When You Believe,” the Academy Award-winning duet performed by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey for the animated film The Prince of Egypt.
Babyface’s extraordinary talent has earned him 13 Grammy Awards, seven BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year honors, 16 No. 1 pop singles, 45 No. 1 R&B singles, and 125 top 10 hits, solidifying his status as a true industry legend.
Those involved in the project expressed deep admiration for Babyface. Director Chris Moukarbel said, “Babyface and his music has always been part of the soundtrack of my life. His imprint on the music world is massive and I feel really honored to be even a small part in sharing his story through directing this film.”Sherrese Clarke, founder and CEO of HarbourView Equity Partners, added, “We’re passionate about investing in stories and creators who’ve shaped culture in lasting ways. Babyface’s influence on music and artistry is immeasurable, his songs have defined generations. We’re proud to support this project celebrating his genius, legacy and the emotional honesty behind his work.”
Co-director Kenya Barris lauded Babyface as “one of one, a culture-defining hitmaker whose impact cannot be denied or overstated. We’re honored to be a part of telling his story and grateful that we’re teaming with HarbourView, a company that understands the importance of investing in culture and storytelling like this, to do so. I hope this project not only spotlights Babyface’s remarkable career but also gives people a glimpse into the man behind the musical genius, who just might be one of the funniest motherfuckers I’ve ever met.”
