Music Icons Abandon 'Misleading' Great American State Fair Amid Controversy

A 16-day festival intended to celebrate America's 250th anniversary, "Freedom 250 Presents: The Great American State Fair," has faced significant artist withdrawals over concerns about its political impartiality. The event, scheduled to run from June 25 through July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was announced on a Wednesday by Freedom 250, an organization that, according to Newsweek, the Interior Department has declared the official branding for all 250th-anniversary celebrations. This declaration implies an organizational oversight by President Trump's White House, a detail that reportedly caused many artists to reconsider their participation.
Martina McBride, a four-time CMA Award-winning female vocalist, announced her withdrawal on Thursday afternoon, May 28, via Instagram. She stated, "I was presented with the opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading." McBride explained that she had asked many questions and was assured it was a nonpartisan event meant to celebrate all 50 states, believing it would unite people through music. However, she noted, "Yesterday things started changing and what we were told is, in fact, not what is happening." Her statement continued, expressing her distress that fans who have been moved by her music might feel abandoned by the meaning behind her songs, reassuring them that this was not the case. McBride received support from fellow musicians, including Sheryl Crow, who lauded her as "authentic and real," while Jason Isbell and Ashley McBryde also voiced their approval.
The legendary R&B group The Commodores also pulled out by late Thursday, May 28, becoming one of five acts to withdraw. Their official statement on Instagram Stories read, "The Commodores will not be performing at Great American State Fair. Our music has always been our voice and we choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party. We support the betterment of all Americans." Founded at Tuskegee University and signed to Motown in 1972, The Commodores have a storied career with numerous hits like “Brick House” and “Three Times a Lady,” four platinum albums, a Grammy Award, and a Vocal Group Hall of Fame induction. They are set to celebrate their 60th anniversary in 2028.
In addition to Martina McBride and The Commodores, other artists who have withdrawn from the free event include Morris Day & The Time, Young MC, and Milli Vanilli. Artists who remain on the bill are Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, Bret Michaels, and C+C Music Factory. Vanilla Ice and C+C Music Factory have reportedly doubled down on their involvement, while Flo Rida and Bret Michaels had yet to comment at the time of the reports.
Beyond the musical performances, which are scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, The Great American State Fair plans to feature salutes to the military and various themed days. These include a Military & Veterans Appreciation Day and a Faith Values and Inspiration Day. Notably, the festival also includes "MAHA Monday," a day dedicated to "Make America Healthy Again," a key initiative promoted by Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Representatives for both Martina McBride and Freedom 250 did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the withdrawals and the evolving nature of the event.
