Mumbai Monsoon Watch: City Braces for Patchy Rain & Mild Temps in Coming Days

Mumbai is poised for a significant seasonal shift in its climate, with persistent rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds anticipated throughout the week of July 2025. Data from both AQI.in and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicate a consistently wet period, with residents advised to prepare for continuous precipitation and carry rain protection.
For Saturday, July 20, 2025, Mumbai is expected to experience patchy rainfall, with temperatures fluctuating between 27.1°C and 29.4°C, averaging at 28.2°C. Humidity levels will be around 74%, and there is a high 96% chance of showers. Winds are predicted to reach speeds of up to 22 km/h. Expected rainfall accumulation for the day is approximately 3.73 mm, with scattered showers likely to intensify in the late afternoon. The UV index will remain low at 2.7. Morning hours, from sunrise at 06:11 AM until noon, are projected to be relatively drier, offering a brief window for outdoor activities, before rain intensity increases after 3 PM. Evening temperatures are expected to cool slightly to around 27.5°C.
The city has already faced the immediate consequences of recent heavy rains, which have led to significant waterlogging in several areas and caused traffic disruptions on key routes. A notable incident was the temporary closure of the Andheri subway earlier in the week due to submersion, impacting public safety and mobility.
Despite these challenges, the consistent rainfall has had a positive impact on Mumbai's crucial water supply. According to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as of July 19, the combined stock in the city's seven primary reservoirs—Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi—has significantly risen to 81.86% of their total capacity, amounting to 11,84,796 million litres. These reservoirs are vital for supplying the city's daily drinking water needs.
The forecast for the upcoming week indicates a continuation of the wet spell. On Monday, July 21, moderate rain is expected with temperatures ranging between 26.6°C and 29.3°C. Tuesday and Wednesday will see increased rainfall, with Wednesday experiencing heavy downpours and temperatures between 26.3°C and 28.1°C. Thursday is forecasted to have the week's heaviest rainfall, with temperatures staying between 26.4°C and 27°C. While the weekend, specifically Friday and Saturday, may bring slight relief, rain will persist, with highs of 28.6°C and 28.1°C respectively.
This persistent rainfall combined with moderate temperatures marks an unusual weather pattern for this time of year in Mumbai, making it one of the wettest periods the city has experienced in July 2025, surpassing its average rainfall for the month. The continuous strong winds throughout the week are expected to help maintain bearable conditions despite the ongoing precipitation. Although significant rainfall is predicted, the IMD has not issued any color-coded alerts. Residents are strongly advised to prepare for predominantly indoor activities and ensure they have appropriate rain protection when venturing outdoors.
