Multiple High-Profile Corporate Figures Under Investigation in China's Corruption Crackdown
China's relentless anti-corruption campaign has continued to sweep across various sectors, with recent arrests, investigations, and severe sentences highlighting an intensified commitment to rooting out deep-seated malfeasance. The crackdown has implicated high-ranking officials and executives from government bodies, financial institutions, state-owned enterprises, and even the sports and healthcare industries, revealing staggering sums involved in bribery, embezzlement, and abuse of power.
Recent developments in July 2025 underscore the ongoing nature of these efforts, with the arrest of Zhang Zaimin, formerly an HSBC employee and General Manager of Bilibili Game Co-Operation Department, and ongoing investigations into Feng Jialu, Vice-President of Marketing at Vipshop, and Han Liu, ex-CEO of food delivery giant Ele.me, for supply chain corruption. Notably, a China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) official, Yao Qian, is under investigation for allegedly receiving bribes via cryptocurrency to support a tech company. These cases follow the investigation into Liu Shaoyong, former Chairman of China Eastern Airlines Group, in late June 2025.
The campaign has delivered some of the most stringent punishments seen, reflecting the severity of the crimes. Liu Liange, former Chairman of Bank of China, received a death sentence with a two-year reprieve in November 2024 for accepting an astounding $166.8 million in bribes, with orders to hand over all personal assets. Similarly, Bai Tianhui, ex-General Manager of China Huarong, was sentenced to death in May 2024 for receiving $152 million in bribes. Zhao Weiguo, former Chairman of Tsinghua Unigroup, and Li Jianping, an ex-Inner Mongolia official, also faced death sentences (with reprieve for Zhao, and execution for Li Jianping in December 2024 after losing an appeal for $420 million corruption).
The financial sector remains a primary target. Numerous banking executives, including Zhang Hongli, ex-Vice President of ICBC, received a death sentence with a two-year reprieve in February 2025 for $24 million in bribes, having previously pleaded guilty and been expelled from the Communist Party. Other significant cases include Cai Esheng, former Vice-Chairman of China's banking regulator, sentenced to life for $57 million in bribes, and Tian Huiyu, ex-President of China Merchants Bank, who received a suspended death sentence for bribery and insider trading. Executives from China Development Bank (Wang Yongsheng, Zhou Qingyu, Li Jiping), Bank of Beijing (Yan Bingzhu), Zhongyuan Bank (Xu Nuojin), Taiping Insurance (Ni Bo, Xiao Xing, Zhang Ke), and various investment and asset management firms have faced investigation, charges, or convictions for financial misconduct.
Corruption within government and state-owned enterprises is equally widespread. Two former China Defence Ministers, Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe, were expelled from the Communist Party in June 2024 for corruption. Former Justice Minister Tang Yijun was charged for bribery and expelled from the Party in February 2025. Other high-profile officials investigated include China's Minister of Agriculture & Rural Affairs Tang Renjian, Vice-Chairman of CSRC Wang Jianjun, and numerous provincial and municipal leaders, such as Beijing Vice-Mayor Gao Peng who was removed from his position. Executives from state-owned giants like Baosteel, ChemChina, CNOOC, China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), and China Unicom have also fallen under scrutiny or faced punishment for a range of illicit activities.
The anti-corruption drive has extended to the sports and healthcare industries. Several figures from the Chinese Football Association (CFA) have been implicated, with Li Tie, ex-head coach of the national soccer team, sentenced to 20 years in jail for $15 million in bribery to manipulate player selections and match results, and ex-CFA President Chen Xuyuan sentenced to life for $11 million in bribes. In healthcare, cases involving medical insurance fraud, particularly linked to pharmaceutical companies like AstraZeneca, and investigations into hospital presidents and health commission heads, reveal the depth of the problem in this critical sector. Even the judiciary has not been immune, with Assistant Judge Bai Bin disappearing with millions in enforcement funds and former Chief Judge of China Supreme People’s Court Zheng Xuelin pleading guilty to $6.6 million in bribes.
The extensive list of investigations, charges, and convictions, encompassing military officers, public security officials, and those involved in vast asset embezzlement (like Li Chuanliang, an ex-Heilongjiang official whose $400 million embezzled assets are being seized), underscores the Chinese government's comprehensive and persistent efforts to enforce discipline and combat financial irregularities across every facet of public and economic life. This sustained crackdown signals an ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability within the nation's leadership and corporate structures.
