Nigerian comedian and actor Debo Adedayo, widely known as Mr Macaroni, has embarked on a surprising new chapter in his career, transitioning from comedy sets and film locations to the prestigious London stage. As part of his postgraduate studies at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, Adedayo has taken on a significant historical role, portraying Lord Commander Thomas Fairfax in James Yeatman’s stage direction of Howard Brenton’s acclaimed play, 55 Days.
The production of 55 Days was meticulously staged at The Backstage Theatre within Mountview’s Peckham campus in London. Renowned British playwright Howard Brenton penned this political drama, which delves into a pivotal moment in history: December 1648, immediately following the English Civil War. The play dramatizes the intense 55-day period leading up to the unprecedented trial and subsequent execution of King Charles I. It intricately explores the profound political power struggle and moral dilemmas faced by the nation, particularly the heavy tug-of-war between Oliver Cromwell, the Parliamentary Army, and the crown, as they grappled with the complex question of how to govern without a monarch.
In this compelling historical drama, Debo Adedayo embodies Lord Commander Thomas Fairfax, the principled commander-in-chief of the Parliamentary Army, one of the most significant military figures of the era. Adedayo’s portrayal anchors the production alongside his MA Performance cohort, which includes talented co-stars such as Benedict Barker, Maryam Gafar, Sam Gordon–Webb, and Ben Mansell. For his role, Adedayo was impeccably dressed in 17th-century period military attire, designed by Sorcha Corcoran, featuring a dark tailored doublet, a crisp white linen collar, and a distinguished military sash, enhancing his immersive performance.
