Mourning and Concerns Surround Ong'ondo Were's Death

The assassination of Charles Ong'ondo Were, the late MP for Kasipul, has deeply affected his family, colleagues, and the wider Kenyan community. Homa Bay county governor Gladys Wanga has been a visible presence, offering condolences and support to the bereaved family. During a visit to Were's Kachien home in Kasipul, accompanied by leaders such as Millie Odhiambo, Wanga was overcome with emotion, captured weeping openly, reflecting the profound sense of loss.

Were's second wife, Anne Were, shared her grief, revealing that her husband had recently built a house for her but tragically passed away before he could even step inside. This revelation added to the sorrow felt by mourners gathered at the home to plan the MP's burial. Anne, originally from Meru, expressed her devastation, stating, "Mheshimiwa amenijengea hapa ata hajalala kwa iyo nyumba (The honourable (leader) built this house for me, and he hasn't even slept in it.)"

Margaret Were, the MP's first wife, highlighted the close relationship between her late husband and Governor Wanga, noting that he even named his animals after her. She expressed gratitude for the governor's support during this difficult time. However, Margaret also voiced concerns about her own safety, claiming that she had been targeted and followed prior to her husband's murder. She appealed for prayers, stating, "Whoever did this! I have also been followed twice while going to work. I know I am not safe. Please pray for me."

Margaret acknowledged the significant challenge of raising their young family without their father, particularly their youngest daughter in Grade 9 at Moi Kabarak. She also sought to reassure her in-laws of her commitment to maintaining peaceful relations within the family following Were's death. The family is seeking closure and justice for the devastating loss of Ong'ondo Were.
