Mourinho's Master Plan: Osimhen Tipped to Spark Real Madrid's Barcelona Takedown!

The race for the next season’s La Liga title is already gaining momentum, with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen positioned at its very core. This intensified competition is further fueled by widespread reports across Spain, Portugal, and Turkey suggesting that Jose Mourinho is on the verge of a dramatic return to Real Madrid, following a disappointing campaign for the Spanish giants.
Real Madrid concluded the 2025/26 season without securing a major trophy, a period likely to see them finish at least 14 points adrift of champions Barcelona. Their 2-0 defeat at Camp Nou against their Catalan rivals not only confirmed Barcelona’s 29th league title but also intensified pressure on the Madrid hierarchy. The season had been marked by turbulence, including the dismissal of Xabi Alonso in January after a string of poor results, with interim coach Alvaro Arbeloa failing to stabilize the team’s performance. Madrid also faced early exits from major European and domestic competitions, being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals by Bayern Munich and suffering a shocking Copa del Rey defeat against second-tier side Albacete.
In light of these frustrations, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reportedly eager to bring Jose Mourinho back to the Santiago Bernabéu. Mourinho, currently managing Benfica, is said to have a €3 million release clause that Madrid is willing to activate. Crucially, Mourinho has reportedly already identified the player he believes can fundamentally alter the balance of power in Spain, and that player is none other than Victor Osimhen.
Mourinho’s admiration for Osimhen spans several years. He closely observed the Nigerian striker during his time at Napoli, facing him in Serie A while managing AS Roma. The Portuguese manager has openly drawn comparisons between Osimhen and Didier Drogba, the powerful forward who flourished under Mourinho’s guidance at Chelsea. This comparison is far from accidental; Real Madrid has struggled significantly to replace the impactful presence once provided by Karim Benzema. Since Benzema’s departure, the club has frequently deployed Kylian Mbappe through the middle, despite the French star’s preference for attacking from the left flank. Vinicius Junior has also spent periods operating in unfamiliar central positions, contributing to a tactical imbalance.
Mourinho reportedly believes that Osimhen can immediately resolve this tactical disequilibrium. The Nigerian’s combination of pace, intelligent movement, relentless pressing, and formidable aerial strength would provide Madrid with a recognized number nine once again. This would enable Mbappe and Vinicius to return permanently to their preferred wider positions, where they are most dangerous and effective. Osimhen’s impressive statistics further underscore why Europe’s elite clubs maintain a keen interest. The former Lille striker recorded 22 goals and eight assists in 33 matches across all competitions, a performance that propelled Galatasaray to another Turkish league title and secured their passage to the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in over a decade. Galatasaray, having signed him permanently last year, reportedly values Osimhen at between €100 million and €150 million.
However, Real Madrid’s pursuit faces a significant obstacle: Barcelona also views Osimhen as the ideal long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to depart this summer after a successful tenure in Catalonia. Although Barcelona clinched the league title under Hansi Flick, many within the club believe that acquiring another elite striker is essential for them to reclaim dominance in Europe. Osimhen’s attributes align perfectly with Flick’s tactical philosophy, which emphasizes aggressive pressing from the front, quick vertical attacking movements, and relentless runs behind defenders – all qualities the Nigerian possesses. Consequently, the contest for Osimhen’s signature could become the defining transfer battle of the summer.
Madrid believes Osimhen could restore crucial balance to their attack under Mourinho, while Barcelona sees him as the key to extending their domestic dominance and bolstering their Champions League aspirations. In many respects, the outcome of the next La Liga title race may hinge on where Osimhen ultimately lands. Should Barcelona secure him, they would significantly strengthen a title-winning squad that already finished comfortably ahead of Madrid this season. Conversely, if Madrid wins the race, Mourinho would instantly acquire the striker he needs to rebuild his side around the talents of Mbappe and Vinicius.
While Osimhen currently appears content in Istanbul, having hinted at his desire to repay Galatasaray’s trust, the summer transfer window often brings unforeseen changes. With Jose Mourinho now a significant factor in the equation, it could prove difficult for the Super Eagles forward to reject the allure of Real Madrid. For a motivated Mourinho, successfully bringing Osimhen to the Bernabéu would represent a pivotal first step in his mission to reclaim the Spanish title from Barcelona.
