Morocco Sparks North African Travel Revolution with High-Speed Rail & Digital Leap

Morocco is undergoing a significant transformation of its transportation infrastructure, primarily focusing on its rail network, in preparation for co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal. This ambitious undertaking aligns with the nation’s ‘Vision 2040’ strategy, which seeks to dramatically expand and modernize the railway system, aiming to establish Morocco as a leader in transport innovation across the African continent.
Central to this modernization is the integration of advanced digital infrastructure. Modern rail operations increasingly rely on real-time data, AI-driven traffic management, and sophisticated control systems to optimize efficiency, enhance safety, and elevate the passenger experience. Morocco’s plans reflect this global trend, prioritizing robust, energy-efficient, and reliable digital networks capable of supporting a future-ready railway system.
The African Development Bank reports that Morocco has secured investment offers totaling approximately $14 billion to upgrade and expand its rail links. The country intends to nearly double its current 2,200 km rail network to an impressive 3,800 km by 2040. This expansion will connect 43 cities, up from the current 23, thereby increasing rail service coverage to 87 percent of the population, a substantial rise from the current 51 percent. The expanded network will incorporate high-speed rail (HSR), intercity lines, and tramway developments, all designed to significantly reduce travel times, foster economic integration, and improve national mobility.
Morocco’s pioneering Al Boraq high-speed rail line, inaugurated in 2018, already links key cities such as Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat, and Casablanca. Building on this success, King Mohammed VI launched the construction of a new 430 km Kenitra–Marrakech high-speed line in April 2025. Designed for speeds up to 350 km/h, this extension will cut travel time from Tangier to Marrakech by over two hours, bringing it down to approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. Crucially, it will also connect Rabat directly to Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport in just 35 minutes, a vital enhancement for accommodating global visitors during the World Cup.
Beyond Marrakech, plans are in motion to extend the high-speed corridor further south to Agadir, a significant economic and tourist hub. The government envisions a continuous high-speed Atlantic axis stretching from Tangier to Agadir, forming a powerful spine for national connectivity. Complementing this north-south route, a second high-speed line is planned between Rabat and Fez, establishing an east-west corridor that will further integrate Morocco’s rail network. Upon completion of these projects, Morocco is projected to boast Africa’s largest high-speed rail network, expanding from 320 km today to over 1,280 km by 2040, a milestone that will enhance domestic travel and elevate Morocco’s standing as a continental transport innovator.
In parallel with high-speed rail, Morocco is making substantial investments in expanding and modernizing its conventional intercity rail system. The national operator plans to more than double this network, from about 2,110 km to 4,410 km by 2040. Upgrading existing corridors is a key priority to enable more frequent services, alleviate bottlenecks, and ensure seamless integration with new high-speed segments. This expansion is supported by a massive renewal of rolling stock, with an order of 168 next-generation trains from leading manufacturers in France, Spain, and South Korea, promising faster, more reliable, and energy-efficient service while enhancing passenger comfort and operational sustainability.
Morocco’s ambitious rail projects are backed by a diverse consortium of financiers, including multilateral development banks, European institutions, friendly nations, and government budgets. This varied funding approach has allowed the country to mobilize capital on an unprecedented scale, with the focus now squarely on effective execution and delivery.
Global digital infrastructure leader Vertiv has identified several critical challenges and opportunities in Morocco’s rail modernization. Cost management is paramount, requiring operators to balance infrastructure performance with minimizing operating and maintenance expenses. Integrating future-ready technologies into existing systems is crucial for boosting efficiency and enabling automation. Vertiv also emphasizes the necessity of building a smart digital infrastructure network that extends from core data centers to edge computing sites at remote stations. This seamless integration is vital for managing the wide array of applications required for modern rail operations, from AI-driven traffic control to real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance. Reliability and safety are of utmost importance, with immediate access to accurate data crucial for swift issue resolution, alongside robust cybersecurity measures to protect communication networks. Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems are essential across all locations to prevent downtime caused by power disruptions, ensuring continuous operation of vital systems.
Morocco’s comprehensive rail overhaul transcends being merely a response to a global sporting event; it represents a strategic investment in the nation’s long-term development. By constructing one of Africa’s most advanced transport networks, Morocco is laying the digital foundations for a smarter, more resilient system that will benefit future generations. This vision encompasses more than just physical connectivity; it embraces the integration of next-generation technologies, seamless operational support, and enhanced system reliability. Through collaboration with government bodies, transport leaders, and technology providers, Morocco is poised to establish a new benchmark for rail innovation in Africa, blending digital ambition with tangible progress. These developments promise exciting opportunities for the African travel and transport sectors, offering faster, more efficient rail travel that will unlock new avenues for tourism, business, and regional mobility. The enhanced infrastructure will facilitate smoother journeys for millions, while the robust digital backbone will support smarter, safer, and more sustainable operations. As Morocco progresses towards 2030 and beyond, its rail transformation story serves as a compelling example of how visionary planning, strategic investment, and technological innovation can converge to reshape a nation’s transport landscape and inspire the continent’s future.
