More than 19,700 students across 135 tertiary institutions in the country have received their second-semester student loans, marking the first time in four years that such payments have been made.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), Dr Saajida Shiraz, disclosed this during the launch of the No Fees Stress policy on Friday, July 4, 2025.
“The Student Loan Trust Fund Board this year has disbursed first-semester loans to a total of 38,440 students across 145 public and private institutions,” Dr Shiraz stated.
“For the first time in four years, we have begun paying second-semester loans,” she continued. “Just three days ago, 19,703 students from 135 institutions received their loans,” she noted.
Dr Shiraz applauded the John Dramani Mahama-led administration for revamping the Fund and ensuring that the timely disbursement of student loans is no longer a luxury but a consistent standard.
"My appreciation goes to the Administrator for prioritising the President's special education finance and research agenda, and for committing to make available to the SLTF the funds necessary for us to meet our commitments," she added.
The Fund was established to provide financial support to students pursuing higher education in Ghana. It seeks to promote access to education and uphold the national ideals enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
The SLTF was created to replace the former SSNIT Students Loan Scheme and is currently governed by the Students Loan Trust Fund Act, 2011 (Act 820).
