Mod Sun Opens Up on Avril Lavigne Split: 'If I Run Into You, It’s All Love'

Mod Sun recently reflected on his highly publicized engagement to pop-punk icon Avril Lavigne, sharing insights into their relationship's end and the profound personal growth he experienced as a result. During an appearance on the November 6 episode of Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast, the multi-genre artist offered a candid and clear perspective on the breakup, stating, “We’re two different people, but I think I had a great influence on her.” He further acknowledged that the “Sk8er Boi” singer played a significant role in helping him “grow up,” leading him to feel more secure and self-assured in his identity than ever before.

The former couple's whirlwind romance began in early 2021 when they collaborated on music, releasing their joint single “Flames” mere weeks later. This professional connection quickly blossomed into a personal one, culminating in Mod Sun’s romantic proposal to Lavigne in Paris in April 2022. However, less than a year later, in February 2023, the couple announced they had called off their engagement.

While Avril Lavigne has maintained public silence regarding the split, Mod Sun has consistently been open about his feelings and journey. In July 2023, he released the poignant breakup track “Strangers,” featuring lyrics that meticulously detailed the rise and eventual fall of their relationship. The accompanying music video, filmed in Paris – the very city where he proposed – added a layer of profound emotional resonance to the narrative.

On the podcast, Mod Sun elaborated on how his perspective on the breakup has evolved over time. He reiterated his belief in his influence on Lavigne and articulated his newfound self-security. “Like now, I’m very secure of who I am, because I’ve been lost in the last three years of wondering, ‘Where do I fit in?’” he explained. He noted a significant shift in his emotional state, remarking, “If we had done this talk three months ago, I might’ve been like, ‘F— that person,’ but now… If I run into you? It’s all love.” He also highlighted his development of greater empathy in the aftermath, advising listeners, “When someone does you wrong, stop thinking, ‘You did me dirty, and I’m out for revenge.’ Step in their position.”

Following the split, Lavigne was briefly linked to rapper Tyga, though their relationship also concluded in mid-2023. Mod Sun, conversely, channeled his energy into his tour and personal healing. Days after the breakup, he shared an uplifting message on Instagram, writing, “Being surrounded by love every night on tour has been an absolute blessing. I just know there’s a plan for it all.”
