Mob Justice Horror: Woman Burnt Alive in Niger Over Blasphemy Allegations

A tragic incident unfolded in Kasuwan-Garba town, located in the Mariga Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, where a woman identified as Amaye, a local food vendor, was lynched and subsequently set ablaze on a Saturday evening. The brutal act was reportedly carried out by a mob following allegations that she made blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad.
According to reports from anonymous sources and Daily Trust, the alleged blasphemous comments were made by Amaye at her restaurant. The incident was said to have occurred after a customer, in a lighthearted manner, proposed marriage to her, citing the tradition of the Prophet. It was in response to this jest that Amaye allegedly uttered the remarks deemed offensive.
Following the emergence of the allegations, Amaye was initially taken to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan-Garba. From there, she was handed over to security operatives who were meant to conduct an investigation into the matter. However, before a proper investigation could proceed, a large mob reportedly overwhelmed the security personnel. The crowd seized Amaye and proceeded to lynch her before setting her ablaze, even before additional security reinforcements could arrive at the scene.
Confirming the grave incident, Abbas Adamu Kasuwan-Garba, the Chairman of Mariga LGA, stated that normalcy had since been restored in the affected town. Further confirmation came from SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command. SP Abiodun detailed the police report, stating: "On 30/8/2025 at about 2pm, report received indicated that one Amaye, a female of Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga LGA made some comments against the Islamic prophet."
The police spokesperson further elaborated on the tragic outcome, adding, "Unfortunately, it led to a mob attack and she was set ablaze before the reinforcement of the security teams." He assured the public that the authorities are actively pursuing justice for the victim, stating, "Meanwhile, efforts are being made to ensure that arrests are effected, investigated and prosecuted" in connection with the lynching.
