Misfits Mayhem: Darren Till Brutally KOs Luke Rockhold, Calls Out Carl Froch

Luke Rockhold, a decorated former MMA champion, has embarked on a new chapter in his combat sports career, stepping into the Misfits Boxing ring. His journey, marked by celebrity romances, high-profile modeling gigs, and the physical toll of fighting, reached a pivotal moment in Manchester, England, as he faced fellow former UFC star Darren Till.
Rockhold's background is deeply rooted in athleticism, coming from a talented sporting family where his father, Steve, played professional basketball in Europe, and his brother, Matt, was a surfer. His mother also played tennis. Luke, however, chose combat, initially training in judo and wrestling before excelling in jiu-jitsu tournaments. He made his professional MMA debut in 2007, swiftly rising through the ranks to win the Strikeforce middleweight title in 2011. Two years later, he joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he became the middleweight champion in 2015, solidifying his status as one of the sport's prominent figures.
Beyond the cage, Rockhold's celebrity status flourished. In 2016, he went public with pop star Demi Lovato, with the pair attending UFC 205. Though their romance was short-lived, as Rockhold humorously noted, "We were just cool for the summer. Actually, we did get tattoos on the first date." By early 2017, the relationship ended, coinciding with Rockhold's loss of the UFC title to Michael Bisping. His mainstream appeal continued, however, leading to a significant deal with Ralph Lauren in 2018, where he became the face of their Polo Blue cologne range, featuring in model shoots and even at Milan and New York fashion weeks.
The latter part of his UFC career saw a challenging period with three consecutive losses between 2018 and 2022, signaling the end of his run with the promotion. Rockhold then made a surprising switch to bare-knuckle boxing in 2023, facing Mike Perry. This venture ended brutally with a second-round stoppage loss after Rockhold's tooth was knocked out, prompting his candid remark about the sport being "dumb." He later rebounded with a win in Karate Combat against Joe Schilling before signing with Misfits Boxing, driven by a desire for "big money fights" and to prove who the "real fighters are." Rockhold, now 40, expresses a profound motivation to continue, stating, "People give up too early. I think people give in to the haters... In my thirties I took time for granted. I'm 40 now and once you're 40 you really start to realize that there's no time to waste and you earn it every day."
Darren Till, meanwhile, has carved out a dominant path in Misfits Boxing since leaving the UFC in 2023. Initially, there was speculation about a potential UFC return, but Till has firmly embraced the world of influencer/crossover boxing. With a 3-0 professional record in Misfits prior to the Rockhold fight, Till had headlined major shows in the UK and proved to be a key attraction for the promotion, bridging the gap between traditional boxing and influencer culture. He views Misfits as a serious, albeit sometimes bizarre, platform, declaring, "As much as it is the circus, it's getting very professional. I treat fighting like it should be treated, it's no joke, it's no game and it shouldn't be called a sport. At the end of the day I run misfits now don't I? Misfits is mine. I choose who I fight. I'll fight anyone [but] they've got to be a big name."
The build-up to the highly anticipated bout between Rockhold and Till was marked by intense verbal sparring. Till acknowledged Rockhold as his "toughest test and biggest name" yet, while not shying away from personal attacks, calling him a "d-------" and a "w-----." Rockhold reciprocated the animosity, accusing Till of excessive partying, quipping, "I see you, Darren, you stay in Ibiza on the stage looking like a 50-year-old man... I'm going to get you boy." Their exchanges were heated, almost leading to physical altercations before the actual fight on August 30.
When the two former UFC stars finally met in the boxing ring at Misfits 22, Till displayed a calm and composed demeanor in the opening round, despite the bitter build-up. Rockhold, initially more active, utilized his lead right-hand jab. However, towards the end of the first three minutes, Till landed two significant left hands that left Rockhold visibly shaken. A chopping left hand then sent Rockhold to the canvas just before the bell, though he managed to beat the count and survive the round.
The second round saw Till pouring on the pressure, with Rockhold electing to fight on the back foot and narrowly avoiding another knockdown. The writing was on the wall, and in the third round, Till unleashed a barrage of punches, backing Rockhold into a corner. A decisive huge left hand, followed by a powerful right, ultimately slumped Rockhold, who was fighting with his chin exposed, into the corner, leaving him no chance of getting up. The referee promptly waved off the contest, declaring Till the victor by a brutal third-round knockout. Rockhold, needing oxygen after the fight, was later consoled by Till, who emphatically buried the rivalry.
In the aftermath, Till seized the moment to deliver an X-rated call-out to ringside guest Carl Froch, challenging the former super middleweight world champion. "Where the f*** is Carl Froch you little s***house. Get in this f***ing ring," Till exclaimed, mocking Froch's YouTube channel before humorously dismissing the challenge due to Froch's age. The event also featured former UFC star Tony Ferguson, who secured a third-round knockout victory over YouTuber "Salt Papi" (Nathaniel Bustamante) on the undercard, marking Ferguson's first win in combat sports since 2019.
