A 55-year-old motorist miraculously survived a train collision in Lagos, escaping uninjured despite severe damage to his Honda car. LASTMA and security personnel swiftly responded to the incident, while authorities strongly cautioned motorists about railway safety and adherence to traffic regulations.
A 55-year-old motorist miraculously escaped without injury after a significant train collision involving his Honda car at the PWD railway line in Lagos. The incident, which left the vehicle severely damaged, occurred as a train traveling towards Agege struck the Honda car, bearing registration number EKY 902 JT. Despite the considerable impact, the driver survived without any reported injuries, and crucially, no casualties were recorded at the scene.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly released a press statement, signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, confirming the details of the crash. LASTMA operatives, in conjunction with security personnel, mounted a swift and coordinated response. Their immediate actions involved rescuing the motorist from the wreckage and efficiently removing the extensively damaged vehicle from the railway track. This rapid intervention allowed the train to resume its journey towards Agege without prolonged delay.
However, the collision did lead to severe traffic congestion around the PWD axis, significantly impeding vehicular movement along the affected corridor for a period after the incident. The wrecked Honda car was subsequently handed over to security personnel, who will conduct further investigation into the precise cause of the collision.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, lauded the exemplary efforts of the operatives and security personnel for their coordinated and prompt response. He underscored the critical importance of their intervention in managing an incident that possessed the potential for catastrophic consequences. Bakare-Oki further stressed that effective collaboration among emergency responders, coupled with situational awareness and swift action, is absolutely essential in mitigating the impact of unforeseen transportation incidents, especially those involving railway operations and adjacent roads.
In light of the incident, Bakare-Oki issued a stern warning to all motorists, urging them to exercise extreme caution and never attempt to cross railway tracks when a train is approaching or already in motion. He emphasized that disregarding established railway safety regulations can lead to devastating and avoidable consequences. Both LASTMA and its General Manager reiterated calls for motorists and all road users to strictly comply with established traffic and railway safety rules, highlighting that responsible conduct and strict adherence to safety instructions are paramount for preventing such collisions and, above all, for protecting human life.
