The Ministry of Health has dismissed claims suggesting a resurgence of COVID-19 in Uganda, affirming that the country remains safe from the virus.

In a press release dated June 11, 2025, Dr. Charles Olaro, Director General of Health Services, clarified that recent speculation is being fueled by the circulation of outdated videos from three years ago, when the pandemic was at its peak.

“The Ministry of Health wishes to clarify recent media reports suggesting a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the country. The circulating messages are old clips being re-shared by unscrupulous individuals to mislead the public,” Dr. Olaro stated.

He further emphasized that the Ministry continues to closely monitor COVID-19 trends to enable early detection and timely response if any new cases arise.

“The Ministry continues to monitor information about new strains of COVID-19 being reported in various parts of the world and working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure the continued safety of the population,” he added.

Dr Olaro advised Ugandans exhibiting flu-like symptoms consistent with COVID-19 to visit the nearest health facility for appropriate treatment and management.

He also called on the public to maintain good hygiene practices including washing their hands with clean water and soap or using an alcohol based sanitizer.

On 12 January 2020, the World Health Organization confirmed that COVID-19, caused by the coronavirus was the cause of a respiratory illness in a cluster of people in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, spreading to all parts of the world by 2020.
