Milli Vanilli Shock: Iconic Duo Pulls Out of Freedom 250 Concert Amidst Fan Disappointment

Several prominent musical acts, including Milli Vanilli, have withdrawn from the Donald Trump-affiliated Great American State Fair shows, scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., to commemorate America’s 250th birthday. Milli Vanilli, known for hits like “Girl You Know It’s True,” formally announced on Thursday, May 28, that they would not be performing at the Freedom 250 concert in any capacity. The duo, initially slated for a June 26 performance according to a Freedom 250 release, clarified that any use of the name “Milli Vanilli” in advertisements for the event should be understood to refer to a tribute band, with no vocal or musical association to their original sound or songs.

Milli Vanilli’s statement specifically named the original/real vocalists—Jodie Rocco, Linda Rocco, Brad Howell, John Davis, and Charles Shaw—emphasizing that they would not be performing their hits live at The Great American State Fair. Jodie Rocco further expressed her shock to The Associated Press upon seeing their name advertised as performers.

Beyond Milli Vanilli, other artists have also distanced themselves from the festival. Young MC, famous for “Bust a Move,” confirmed his withdrawal, stating on social media, “I have informed my agents that I will not be performing.” Similarly, Morris Day, frontman of The Time, announced he would not be participating in the Great American State Fair.

The Freedom 250 festival is planned as a 16-day event in D.C., running from June 25 through July 10 at the National Mall. Despite the withdrawals, the bill still includes performers such as Flo Rida, Bret Michaels, The Commodores, and Martina McBride.

Historically, Milli Vanilli rose to prominence in the late 1980s, originally featuring Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus. Producer and founder Frank Farian had recruited Brad Howell, John Davis, Charles Shaw, Jodie Rocco, and Linda Rocco to provide the actual vocals for Milli Vanilli’s tracks. Rob Pilatus tragically passed away in 1998 due to an accidental drug and alcohol overdose. Milli Vanilli is renowned for several Billboard Hot 100 top five hits, including “Blame It on the Rain” (No. 1), “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You” (No. 1), “Baby Don’t Forget My Number” (No. 1), “Girl You Know It’s True” (No. 2), and “All or Nothing” (No. 4).
