Military will be fully equipped to defeat insecurity - Tinubu

Published 19 hours ago3 minute read

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to bolstering national security through sustained investment in modern military assets and cutting-edge technology.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President made this declaration on Friday while commissioning two Agusta A-109S Trekker Power Attack Helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at the Presidential Air Fleet Apron in Abuja.

The event was part of activities commemorating the 61st anniversary of the NAF. In his address, President Tinubu stressed that the Federal Government would continue to provide the armed forces with the necessary resources to tackle insecurity in Nigeria and the wider West African region.

“We will continue to invest in advanced defence technologies and ensure our forces are fully equipped to confront both conventional and asymmetric threats,” he stated. He expressed confidence that the newly inducted helicopters would significantly enhance the Air Force’s operational capacity in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and other security challenges.

While acknowledging current fiscal limitations, President Tinubu emphasised that the acquisition of the helicopters, alongside other platforms such as the Diamond-62 surveillance aircraft, T-129 ATAK helicopters, and King Air 360i, demonstrates his administration’s prioritisation of national security.

“These acquisitions, despite budgetary constraints, reaffirm our steadfast dedication to protecting our nation. They will significantly enhance the NAF’s ability to address security threats within Nigeria and the sub-region,” he noted.

The President further highlighted that strengthening air power is a key component of his administration’s broader goal to create a secure and stable environment necessary for economic growth and investment.

“National security is the cornerstone of our Renewed Hope Agenda. Peace and stability are essential for prosperity. Our military’s efforts are vital in restoring public confidence and enabling Nigerians to pursue productive activities,” he added.

He also urged the Air Force to maintain operational readiness and uphold strict standards of discipline and equipment maintenance to ensure the optimal use of the new assets.

In his remarks, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, praised the helicopter induction as a clear reflection of the Federal Government’s support for the armed forces.

He stated that the new aircraft would improve the Air Force’s ability to respond swiftly to a range of security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and oil theft.

“The Agusta A-109S helicopters are well-suited for high-intensity missions, offering versatility for combat, training, and emergency operations,” he explained.

Abubakar also emphasised the need for a flexible and responsive Air Force capable of adapting to an evolving security landscape. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force, Senator Austin Akobundu; Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and other senior government officials.
