HULL City are set to sack manager Ruben Selles after just six months in charge.

Selles took charge of the Tigers in December when they were bottom of the league on the back of a nightmare short stint for previous boss Tim Walter.

Selles, who left Reading for Hull, led City to nine wins from his previous 26 games in charge and the Tigers escaped Championship relegation on the final day thanks to the draw at Portsmouth.

But owner Acun Ilicali is now set to wield the axe and start the search for his fifth permanent manager.

He sacked Liam Rosenior last summer despite the fact the Tigers only just missed out on a place in the Championship play-offs.

It's not clear at this stage who'll be in contention to take charge at the MKM Stadium, though Hull Live say some of the candidates are likely to be those who were in the running in December when Selles got the job.

Hull will become the fourth Championship club on the lookout for a new manager, with Norwich and West Brom also currently without a head coach, as are Southampton who are on their way down from the Premier League.

Jack Wilshere took charge of the Canaries for the final two games of the season after Johannes Hoff Thorup's dismissal - which included the 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough - but has reportedly been told he isn't in contention for the job on a full-time basis.

According to fresh reports from the Telegraph this week, Jurgen Klopp's former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders is set to be interviewed, while ex-Boro midfielder Gary O'Neil and Steve Cooper are also said to be in contention.

West Brom, meanwhile, are searching for a permanent replacement for Tony Mowbray after his surprise sacking in the last month of the season.

Ex-Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason is currently favourite with bookmakers, ahead of ex-Boro midfielder James Morrison, who was in interim charge after Mowbray's exit, Russell Martin and Portsmouth boss John Mousinho.

But Mousinho has distanced himself from the vacancy.

He told The News: "It’s a funny one, I was out in Portugal and my folks started receiving a few texts. I had no idea what was going on at first, I quickly figured out what was happening.

"There was contact from myself to the football club, nothing from the football club to this football club, nothing from any agents, it came out of nowhere.

"I was sat around the pool having a little chuckle. I did speak to a couple of journalists on the UK side, just to let them know there was nothing in it, just to reassure everyone. That was it really.

"Sometimes bookies' odds are really accurate, and sometimes they aren't. That one was completely inaccurate, certainly in terms of there being any link whatsoever, there wasn’t even any low-end agent talks.

"I am still sitting here and I am sure West Brom are doing the same, chuckling at the notion, because neither of us have spoken to each other."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is currently favourite to take charge at Southampton, who sacked Ivan Juric after their relegation was confirmed. Simon Rusk and Adam Lallana have been in interim charge since but aren't thought to be in contention to get the job on a permanent basis.

Leicester City could also be on the lookout for a new manager this summer, with Ruud van Nistelrooy's future in doubt. Sean Dyche was linked over the weekend.

Earlier this week, Watford announced the appointment of Paulo Pezzolano as their new head coach.

The 42-year-old Uruguayan succeeds Tom Cleverley, who was sacked on May 6 following the Hornets’ disappointing 14th-place finish in the Sky Bet Championship.

Pezzolano becomes Watford’s 18th permanent boss since Gianfranco Zola left in December 2013.

He began his managerial career at Uruguay’s Torque City, and after spells in Mexico and Brazil he took over at Spanish club Real Valladolid, earning promotion to LaLiga in 2024.

“Paulo has a hugely-impressive track record working with young players, which is essential when you look at the age profile of our squad,” Watford sporting director Gian Luca Nani told the club’s official website.

“We believe Paulo is the leader we need as we refocus ahead of the new season. He is fully aware of our ambitions and determination to push for promotion, and embraces that challenge.”
