Michigan Rattlers lead stocked music weekend in the metro area
It’s been 15 years since the Michigan Rattlers made their first recordings — for an EP that came out the following year to rave reviews and a Rolling Stone magazine designation as one of the Ten New Country Artist You Need to Know.
There have been three albums since, and singer-guitarist Graham Young is comfortable that the Petoskey-formed quartet has only evolved from that auspicious start.
“I think more confidence is an obvious answer, but just our ability to show up anywhere at this point and set up and play our show, I think, is something we’ve really learned how to do,” says Young, 31, who now resides in Santa Monica, California, though the Rattles remain based out of Petoskey. “That’s taken a long time, but our growth being able to make and record music has exponentially grown. We came from a very performance-driven musical background, so it’s really taken the last 10 years and a handful of albums to really understand how to record an album and get across what we want to get across, ’cause it’s a very, very different thing than playing live.”
Last year’s third album, “Waving From a Sea” — recorded in Nashville and produced by fellow Michigander Dominic John Davis of Jack White’s Band (and more) — certainly supports Young’s view. With its polished sonics, more intricate arrangements and greater use of synthesizers, it’s hardly country and perhaps beyond even Americana — but still a blend whose sophistication is something Young says he, bassist Adam Reed, keyboardist Christian Wilder and drummer Tony Audia hope to pursue further as they look towards working on the band’s next album later this year.
“I think at our level, to be a (Rattlers) fan is to be a pretty passionate music lover, and I think we’re lucky enough to have a good, solid group of people that really push us by word of mouth,” Young says. “I feel like I’m always hearing people saying they texted three or four friends and they’re personally bringing people out to come to the show for the first time.
“It’s a nice combination of the modern way people find music — TikTok and Instagram and all that — and the old way, too, which I think is great.”
