Michael Jordan's Iconic 'Last Dance' Jersey Sells for Record-Breaking Amount!
Michael Jordan's game-worn jersey from Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals has shattered auction records, selling for an astounding $12,260,000. This iconic piece from the Bulls' "Last Dance" season was sold via Joopiter, setting a new benchmark for NBA jersey sales and reinforcing the enduring legacy of the basketball legend.
A significant relic from the Chicago Bulls' revered "Last Dance" era has achieved a new milestone in sports memorabilia. Michael Jordan's game-worn jersey, specifically from Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals, was successfully auctioned on Tuesday for an unprecedented $12,260,000. This record-breaking sale was facilitated by Rob Gough through Joopiter, a prominent digital marketplace and auction house curated by none other than Pharrell Williams.
The highly anticipated auction had projected the jersey to sell within the range of $10 million to $15 million. It ultimately closed at 8:06 p.m. EST, marking a new record for an NBA jersey sale. This figure significantly surpassed the previous record, which was also held by a Michael Jordan jersey – his Game 1 jersey from the very same 1998 series, sold in September 2022 for $10.1 million at Sotheby's.
The provenance and authenticity of the jersey are well-documented. It was officially registered in August and authenticated by MeiGray in December 2015. Furthermore, it was photo-matched to two distinct images from Getty Images, solidifying its status. Before reaching the Joopiter auction, the jersey was in the possession of Rob Gough, who acquired it in 2023, as reported by Sportico. Earlier, Bill Thoma of Chicago had owned the jersey, having purchased it approximately eight or nine years prior to a March 2015 letter he posted on Joopiter. Thoma's letter detailed that he bought the jersey from Evan LaManna, a sales manager and partner at Upper Class Collectibles in New Jersey. LaManna reportedly obtained the jersey from a "close associate" of the Bulls legend, leveraging his professional relationship with Jordan.
The physical characteristics of the jersey itself add to its allure and authenticity. It features an NBA Finals logo patch prominently displayed at the top right chest, is constructed from a mesh material, and includes an NBA Authentics tag with the size 50 designation at the bottom left. The jersey represents a pivotal moment in the 1998 Finals, where Jordan delivered a stellar performance in Game 3, contributing 24 points, three rebounds, and two assists in a dominant 96-54 victory. This win propelled Chicago to a crucial 2-1 series lead over the Utah Jazz. The Bulls ultimately clinched the 1998 NBA Finals in six games, securing Jordan's sixth championship.
Following this monumental achievement, Jordan announced his second retirement from the NBA on January 13, 1999, concluding his illustrious career with six championships. The record-setting sale of this particular jersey underscores its immense historical value and its significance as a tangible link to one of basketball's most iconic figures and one of the sport's most legendary championship runs.
