Metal Titans Unite: Metallica Pays Epic Tribute to AC/DC & Rose Tattoo in Sydney

Metallica concluded the Australian leg of their M72 World Tour on November 15 with a memorable concert at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, where they paid homage to Australia's iconic rock heritage. The band's performance featured heartfelt tributes to two of the country’s most influential rock acts: AC/DC and Rose Tattoo. This special gesture occurred during Metallica's signature “doodle” segment, a stripped-back interlude led by guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo, which has become a beloved staple of their current tour.
During the Sydney show, Hammett and Trujillo captivated the sold-out crowd by launching into an instrumental rendition of AC/DC’s powerful anthem “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You).” They seamlessly transitioned into Rose Tattoo’s classic “Nice Boys Don’t Play Rock ’n’ Roll,” eliciting thunderous approval from the audience. This moment held particular significance as AC/DC themselves were performing their Power Up tour concurrently in Melbourne, creating a rare and poignant split-city convergence of two generations of rock royalty across Australia.
The Sydney concert marked the culmination of a five-city Australian tour, during which Metallica consistently incorporated local tributes at each stop. In Perth on November 1, Hammett and Trujillo delighted fans with a performance of John Butler Trio’s “Zebra.” Adelaide’s audience was treated to a rendition of The Angels’ “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again,” while fans in Melbourne heard a special nod to The Living End’s “Prisoner of Society,” infused with hints of INXS’ “Don’t Change.” The Brisbane show on November 12 featured The Chats’ high-energy punk anthem “Smoko,” a performance that reportedly sent the audience into full-throttle chaos.
Metallica played to an estimated 70,000 fans in Sydney, with strong support from Evanescence and Suicidal Tendencies. The M72 tour's distinctive production elements were on full display, including the innovative 360-degree stage design, the iconic Snake Pit walkway, robotic cameras, and drones. This cutting-edge production approach has been instrumental in defining the visual identity of the M72 tour, pushing the boundaries of the stadium concert experience into new territories.
The timing of Metallica’s Australian tour also coincided with a significant period for the country's rock music enthusiasts. Oasis had just concluded their own Australian stadium run one week prior, and the highly anticipated return of AC/DC created back-to-back landmark moments for rock fans nationwide. Following their successful Australian engagements, Metallica is scheduled to continue their M72 World Tour in Auckland on November 19, before proceeding to Qatar for their next series of performances.
