Meta's AI Bedtime Story App Raises Questions About Parenting and Imagination

Meta is testing a new AI-powered storytelling app called StoryKit that allows parents to generate personalised children's stories without writing a single word. Currently being piloted in select countries, the app lets users customise characters, settings, moral lessons, and background music using artificial intelligence.

Parents can even upload photos of toys or people to feature in the stories, while built-in safety filters and an 18+ age restriction are intended to make the platform suitable for adult users creating content for children.

StoryKit is designed to offer convenience, particularly for busy parents looking for instant bedtime stories. Users simply choose a character, describe the world they want the story to take place in, and select values such as kindness, courage, or empathy for the narrative to explore. Meta describes the app as a creative storytelling tool that encourages personalised and imaginative experiences for children.

However, the launch has sparked conversations about the role of AI in childhood and parenting. Critics argue that while the technology may be useful, it risks replacing one of humanity's oldest traditions, telling stories, with algorithm-generated narratives.
