, Financial) has completed the acquisition of PlayAI, a startup specializing in AI voice technology. The entire PlayAI team will join Meta, reporting to Johan Schalkwyk, who recently joined Meta from another AI voice-focused startup. This acquisition aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ambition to advance AI technology within Meta’s ecosystem.

Zuckerberg has prioritized AI development, investing around $65 billion in AI infrastructure and recruiting top global talent. Recently, Meta restructured its AI division, appointing former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang to lead the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs. The financial terms of the PlayAI acquisition were not disclosed, but a Meta spokesperson confirmed the deal.

PlayAI, formerly PlayHT, offers low-latency text-to-speech (TTS) and AI voice agents capable of real-time voice generation and localization. Their platform enables users to create and manage natural-sounding digital voices for various applications, including content dubbing and virtual characters.

This acquisition follows Meta’s recent $15 billion investment for a 49% stake in Scale AI. Meta’s aggressive AI acquisition strategy is reminiscent of its past purchases of Instagram and WhatsApp, aiming to enhance its AI capabilities across products like Instagram Reels and Quest headsets.
