Mergner Joins West Virginia Basketball Operations

West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Ross Hodge has officially announced the appointment of Alex Mergner as the new Director of Men’s Basketball Operations. Mergner, a native of Milford, Delaware, brings a wealth of experience from within the Mountaineer basketball program, having dedicated the last four seasons to its success.
Prior to his elevation to this key operational role, Mergner served as the head manager during the recently concluded season. His journey with the team began three seasons earlier as a diligent student manager, gradually progressing through the ranks and demonstrating a deep understanding of the program’s needs.
Coach Hodge expressed his enthusiasm for Mergner’s continued involvement, stating, “We are excited to have Alex remain with our men’s basketball program. He has been with men’s basketball for the last four years and will continue to do a variety of roles that will help with the success of Mountaineer Basketball.” This sentiment underscores Mergner’s proven track record and integral role in the team’s ongoing operations.
In addition to his contributions at WVU, Mergner expanded his professional experience in the summer of 2024 by interning with the NCAA Basketball Academy. In this role, he played a crucial part in assisting with the coordination, operation, and logistics for over 100 participants, further honing his organizational and event management skills.
Academically, Mergner is well-equipped for his new responsibilities. He successfully earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from WVU in 2024 and is currently in the process of finalizing his master’s degree in business administration, also from West Virginia University. This combination of practical experience and academic rigor positions him as a valuable asset to the men’s basketball program.
