Mercedes-Benz recalls 90,000 vehicles for modification of C-pillar and roof lining | Repairer Driven News

More than 90,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles have been recalled because, in certain crash scenarios, a rear occupant’s head could make contact with the C-pillar, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notice says

The C-pillar may not absorb an adequate amount of the impact, failing to meet the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS), according to the notice.

“An increased risk of injury for rear seat occupants during an unbelted crash scenario without air bag cannot be ruled out,” a NHTSA safety recall report says.

It adds that due to a deviation in the development process, the damping of the rear roof lining might be too stiff for an FMVSS test scenario.

An investigation was launched by Mercedes-Benz AG (MBAG) in May based on two FMVSS tests conducted on March 6 and May 7 by a third-party test facility on behalf of NHTSA, the report says.

MBAG analyzed discrepancies compared to internal tests. This included video analyses and head form impact location investigations. They revealed differences in impact angles and points.

An internal test was conducted to reassess the worst-case scenario for this specific FMVSS test setup. Starting May 26, test findings were reviewed, and plant actions were initiated to rework all vehicles still in MBAG’s possession, and potential affected vehicles in the field were identified.

On June 2, MBAG determined that a potential non-compliance cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.

MBAG also confirmed there are no warranty claims, or field or service reports related to this non-compliance.

The recall includes certain 2023-2025 models equipped with a panoramic sunroof. Dealers will modify the roof lining and C-pillar trim free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Aug. 4. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
