Mercedes-AMG GT XX Smashes EV Record, Dares Tesla to Catch Up!

Mercedes-AMG has made a resounding statement in the world of electric vehicles, shattering no fewer than 25 long-distance records with its new Concept AMG GT XX prototype. This impressive ultramarathon run took place at the high-speed test track at Nardò, involving a dedicated team of 17 racing drivers, including Formula 1 star George Russell and Doriane Pin. Two Concept AMG GT XXs tirelessly lapped the 7.8-mile Nardò Ring for almost eight days, specifically 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes, and 7.1 seconds, demonstrating unparalleled endurance.
Among the most remarkable achievements, Mercedes-AMG's EV prototype successfully covered 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles), a distance equivalent to the Earth’s equator, in less than eight days, maintaining an average speed of over 137 mph, even with stops for recharging and tire changes. Another significant record broken was the distance covered in a 24-hour period, with the Concept AMG GT XX achieving 5,479 kilometers (3,404 miles) at an average speed of just over 142 mph. This significantly surpassed the previous EV record of under 4,000 kilometers (2,461 miles) during the same timeframe. Further milestones included covering 5,000 miles in just over 35 hours, 10,000 miles in under three days, and 20,000 miles in just six days and 23 minutes, consistently running at 186 mph while on track. The consistency of the performance was underscored by the fact that the second AMG GT XX finished just 15.5 miles behind the record-breaking car at the marathon's conclusion.
The success of the record run is attributed not only to the car's formidable 1,340 horsepower tri-motor powertrain but more significantly to its remarkably impressive charging speeds and advanced battery technology. The vehicles averaged a charging rate of around 850 kW, with a peak rate of 950 kW observed from a megawatt charger developed by Alpitronic. This rapid charging capability allowed for approximately 250 miles of range to be recovered in just five minutes. This groundbreaking technology is a testament to Merc's new AMG.EA platform and its innovative components.
Mercedes-AMG’s Chief Technology Officer, Markus Schäfer, highlighted the mission to redefine the limits of what is technically possible in the age of electric drives. He emphasized that the company is the first manufacturer to employ axial-flux motors and directly cooled batteries in fully electric models, technologies now proven superior through this event. The high-performance battery, developed in-house for the AMG.EA architecture with the crucial assistance of engineers from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, features over 3,000 cells with a unique nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminium (NCMA) combination in the cathode and an anode with silicon content. Its tall and thin design, encased in lightweight laser-welded aluminium housings, enhances electrical and heat conductivity and facilitates more effective cooling by electrically non-conductive oil.
