Mercedes-AMG GT XX Annihilates EV Records: A Glimpse at the Wild Concept

The Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept EV has established itself as a groundbreaking precursor to AMG's electric future, not only by its stunning design but primarily through its record-shattering performance at the Nardo Ring in southern Italy. This electric-powered four-door super sedan prototype embarked on an extraordinary endurance run, covering a staggering 24,901 miles – equivalent to a lap around the Earth’s equator – in less than eight days. This feat was accomplished in 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes, and 7.1 seconds, maintaining an impressive average speed of over 137 mph, even accounting for necessary stops for recharging and tire changes. The GT XX concept broke a total of 25 electric vehicle speed and distance records over 3,177 laps of the 7.8-mile Nardo circuit, unequivocally demonstrating the immense capabilities of Mercedes-AMG's forthcoming electric vehicle architecture.
Among its many achievements, the Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept decisively beat the existing 24-hour electric vehicle distance record of 2,461 miles by an additional 943 miles, covering 3,404 miles at an average speed just over 142 mph. Further proving its endurance, it completed 5,000 miles in a little over 35 hours, 10,000 miles in just under three days, and 20,000 miles in merely six days and 23 minutes, all while sustaining a constant speed of 186 mph on the track. The consistency of this performance was underscored by a second AMG GT XX prototype finishing a mere 15.5 miles behind the record-breaking car at the conclusion of the weeklong marathon. Mercedes-AMG boss Michael Schiebe emphasized that the Nardo event was designed to prove that the new AMG.EA electric vehicle architecture is capable of more than just short bursts of scintillating acceleration; it is engineered for sustained, high-performance endurance, describing it as a “marathon sprinter.”
At the heart of the GT XX’s exceptional performance lies its cutting-edge technological platform. The concept vehicle boasts a formidable 1,340 horsepower (one megawatt), tri-motor powertrain, which Mercedes-Benz chief technology officer Markus Schäfer confirmed is identical to what will power the production version of the car and AMG’s forthcoming high-performance electric SUV. The car leverages an 800V architecture and employs advanced axial-flux motors, developed by British-based Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Yasa Ltd. These motors are remarkably efficient, being two-thirds lighter and occupying one-third the space of traditional radial-flux motors. Packaged into two ‘High Performance Electric Drive Units,’ the rear-mounted unit weighs 140kg and integrates two motors, a planetary gearset, and a silicon carbide inverter within a single oil-cooled casing, while the front 80kg unit contains one motor, a spur gear transmission, and an inverter. These Yasa-developed motors, produced in a Mercedes facility in Berlin, are celebrated for their continuous power delivery, making the car a
