Mega-Stars Unite: Dua Lipa and Nile Rodgers Ignite MSG with 'Le Freak'

Dua Lipa's Radical Optimism World Tour has become a remarkable series of collaborations and tributes, showcasing the pop star's unique approach to live performances. The British-Albanian artist recently completed a four-night residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden, delighting fans with unexpected guest appearances and a tradition of performing locally inspired covers.
On Saturday, September 20, during her third show at MSG, Lipa brought out legendary musician Nile Rodgers for an electrifying rendition of Chic’s 1978 disco anthem “Le Freak.” This surprise was part of a broader tribute to New York City's rich musical heritage. In previous MSG performances earlier that week, the “Dance the Night” singer paid homage to the city with covers of iconic New York staples, including Alicia Keys’ “No One” and Blondie’s “One Way or Another,” noting to the crowd that she was “spoiled with the choice” in New York.
The practice of featuring hometown heroes and performing regional covers commenced earlier in the U.S. leg of the tour. At the tour’s kickoff event in Chicago on September 5, Lipa welcomed local legend Chaka Khan to the stage for a powerful duet of the 1983 hit “Ain’t Nobody.” This innovative tradition had already been established during her earlier stops in Australia and New Zealand, where she honored artists such as AC/DC, Lorde, and Kylie Minogue with covers. These international dates also saw special guests like Troye Sivan, Tame Impala, and Crowded House’s Neil Finn join her on stage.
Although less frequent, the European leg of the tour also featured memorable guest appearances and localized tributes. In Madrid, Lipa performed Enrique Iglesias’ “Hero.” Wembley Stadium in London witnessed Jamiroquai’s Jay Kay collaborating with her on “Virtual Insanity,” followed by Charli XCX making a guest appearance for her track “360” on the subsequent night. Other notable moments included a performance of The Zutons’ “Valerie” (popularized by Amy Winehouse) with frontman Dave McCabe in Liverpool, a rendition of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” in their hometown, and a heartfelt tribute to the late Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor with “Nothing Compares 2 U” in Dublin.
The Radical Optimism World Tour is in support of Dua Lipa’s third studio album, *Radical Optimism*, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 2024. The album has produced several successful singles, including the lead track “Houdini,” which held the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for 17 weeks. Lipa is set to conclude her four-night MSG engagement on Sunday, September 21, before continuing the North American leg with scheduled stops in Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. Following these, the tour will proceed with dates across South America and Mexico. The North American segment of the tour had resumed with back-to-back shows in Toronto on September 1–2, after a brief hiatus in August.
