Massive Win for Women's Football: CAF Doubles WAFCON Prize to $2M!

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant and record-setting increase in prize money for the upcoming 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). This substantial financial boost underscores CAF's commitment to investing in and developing women's football across the African continent, aiming to elevate the tournament's prestige and competitiveness.

For the first time in the tournament's history, the champions of the 2026 WAFCON are set to receive an unprecedented $2 million. This figure represents a remarkable doubling of the amount won by Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the previous tournament, highlighting the scale of the increase. Furthermore, the overall prize fund for the continental showpiece has seen a substantial rise of 67 percent, climbing from $3.475 million to a new total of $5.8 million.

Beyond the champions, other top-performing teams will also benefit from enhanced financial rewards. The runners-up in 2026 will take home $750,000, which is a 50 percent increase from the previous edition. The third-placed team will also see their reward increase by 43 percent, further demonstrating CAF's comprehensive approach to distributing financial benefits. In a move to ensure broader support for all participants, each of the 16 participating nations will receive $150,000 in participation fees, an increase from the $125,000 offered previously.

This latest financial investment is part of CAF’s ongoing strategic drive to improve the financial incentives available in women’s football throughout Africa. Historically, prize money for the tournament winners has seen an astonishing 900 percent increase, skyrocketing from just $200,000 under older structures to the current $2 million. Similarly, the total prize fund has grown by an impressive 495 percent, rising from an initial $975,000 to the current $5.8 million.

In addition to the financial enhancements, CAF has also expanded the competition itself, increasing the number of participating teams from 12 to 16. This expansion is designed to broaden participation opportunities and elevate the overall standard of the women’s game across Africa. The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to be staged in Morocco, taking place from July 26 to August 16, where the continent’s top teams will compete for the largest prize purse in the tournament’s history. The enhanced financial package is widely expected to significantly boost the development of women’s football in Africa, while simultaneously increasing the prestige and competitiveness of this biennial championship.
