Massive Recall Alert: 4.3 Million Ford Trucks Impacted by Critical Software Glitch!

Ford has announced a significant recall affecting 4.3 million trucks, SUVs, and vans due to a software vulnerability within the integrated trailer module (ITRM). This recall, identified by NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V104000, was issued on February 20, 2026, and addresses a critical issue where trailer lighting and brakes may not function correctly. The affected vehicles span multiple year models from 2021 to 2027 and include popular models such as the F-150, Super Duty trucks (F-250 to F-600), Expedition, E-Transit, Maverick, Ranger, and the Lincoln Navigator.
The core of the problem lies in a "software vulnerability" within the ITRM, which can lead to a "race condition" between the module and the CAN bus Standby Control bit. Essentially, during vehicle startup, if the ITRM's electronic communication is not properly recognized amidst the various computer modules attempting to communicate simultaneously, it can lose connection with the vehicle's system. This communication loss compromises crucial trailer functions, potentially making it impossible for following motorists to detect when the rig is braking or turning, or even to see it after dark. In rare but critical instances, this glitch can also lead to a complete loss of trailer brake control, posing a severe safety risk, especially for heavy-duty trucks towing large loads.
Drivers experiencing this software glitch will typically receive warning indications. A pop-up message on the instrument panel will display "Trailer Brake Module Fault," accompanied by a rapidly flashing turn signal telltale. Additionally, a "Blind Spot Assist System Fault" message may also appear, further alerting the driver to the issue.
The good news for affected owners is that Ford anticipates rectifying this problem with an over-the-air (OTA) software update. While the OTA update is the primary solution, customers will also have the option to have the upgrade performed at a dealership. Ford expects to begin rolling out this crucial update in May. The manufacturer has stated that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries directly related to this specific problem. Official communications regarding the recall are scheduled to commence on March 17, at which point vehicle owners will be able to utilize online VIN databases to ascertain if their specific vehicle is included in the recall.
The extensive list of affected vehicles includes: Ford E-Transit (2026), Ford Expedition (2022-2027), Ford F-150 (2021-2026), Ford F-250 Super Duty (2022-2026), Ford F-350 Super Duty (2022-2026), Ford F-450 Super Duty (2022-2026), Ford F-550 Super Duty (2022-2026), Ford F-600 Super Duty (2023-2026), Ford Maverick (2022-2026), Ford Ranger (2024-2026), and Lincoln Navigator (2022-2027). This wide range of models underscores the broad impact of the software vulnerability across Ford and Lincoln's truck and SUV lineup.
