Massive fire breaks out at Gwalior hospital, 190 patients rescued | Bhopal News - The Times of India
NEW DELHI: A
fire
broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the gynaecology department at Kamla Raja
Hospital
in
Gwalior
early on Sunday, prompting the evacuation of more than 190 patients, officials said.
No casualties were reported.
The blaze erupted around 1am due to a suspected short circuit in an air-conditioner inside the ICU, Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chouhan said. Hospital guards acted swiftly, breaking windows to evacuate ICU patients and shifting them to a super speciality hospital.
"More than 190 patients, including 13 from the ICU, were rescued and relocated. Fortunately, all patients are safe," Chouhan said, adding that an inquiry will be conducted into the incident.
According to a release from the state Public Relations Department, fire tenders of the Gwalior Municipal Corporation later doused the flames. The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in the gynaecology department.
An attendant at the hospital described the chaotic scene, saying, "The premises were filled with smoke, making visibility difficult. The staff immediately started shifting patients. Our patient is safe now and has been relocated."
Authorities have assured a thorough probe to determine the exact cause of the fire.
