Marvel's X-Men Reboot Unveils Key Mutant Castings
The X-Men franchise is in a new golden age, with upcoming animated seasons, a Wolverine game, and significant progress on Marvel Studios' highly anticipated live-action reboot. New details reveal a May 2028 release date, Jake Schreier as director, and a growing cast, including Asa Germann as the winged mutant Angel.
Marvel's X-Men franchise is currently experiencing a renaissance, offering fans an abundance of new content. This includes the recently released second season of X-Men '97, which followed a two-year hiatus, with Marvel Animation confirming that Seasons 3 and 4 are slated to premiere in the next two years, ensuring a continuous flow of animated adventures. Additionally, a new Wolverine video game by Insomniac is launching exclusively on PlayStation 5, and despite initial mixed reviews, it is anticipated to be a major title this year. However, arguably the most anticipated development is Marvel Studios' live-action X-Men reboot movie, which is progressing rapidly towards its theatrical release.
The highly anticipated Marvel Studios' untitled X-Men reboot film is officially scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on May 5, 2028. This release date places it approximately six months after Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to act as a soft reboot for the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Jake Schreier, known for directing Thunderbolts, is helming the X-Men project, with a writing team comprising Joanna Calo, Lee Sung Jin, and Michael Lesslie. Kevin Feige is producing the film, ensuring its integration into the overarching MCU narrative.
Significant casting announcements have already been made, revealing a formidable ensemble for the mutant team. Sadie Sink has been cast as Jean Grey, notably making her the first mutant to debut in the MCU with an appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The roster further includes Inde Navarrette as Rogue/Anna Marie, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Kit Connor as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Maya Boyd as Storm. The iconic X-Men comic-book villain, Mister Sinister, will be portrayed by Adam Driver. Most recently, news broke that Asa Germann will join the cast as Warren Worthington III, better known as the winged mutant Angel.
As Angel, Warren Worthington III possesses the ability to fly thanks to his distinctive large, bird-like wings. The character has a history of live-action portrayals, with Ben Foster playing an adult Angel and Cayden Boyd a younger version in Fox’s X-Men: The Last Stand. Ben Hardy also took on the role in X-Men: Apocalypse, depicting his darker alter-ego, Archangel, complete with metallic wings. Germann's casting adds another layer of excitement to the upcoming reboot, bringing a fresh face to this classic mutant.
Asa Germann is rapidly emerging as a prominent talent, primarily recognized for his breakout role as Sam Riordan in Gen V, the superhero spin-off series from The Boys on Amazon Prime Video. In Gen V, Germann played a complex character with schizophrenia, showcasing near invulnerability and massive strength while attending Godolkin University. His character's journey involved being brainwashed and temporarily siding against his friends in Season 2, before being rescued. Germann also made appearances in two episodes of The Boys Season 4. Though Gen V was canceled after two seasons, Germann’s career momentum continued with a role as Lucas Bowden in this year’s horror hit Scream 7. His other acting credits include projects like Monster, Caviar, and Two Little Boys, solidifying his status as a rising star in Hollywood.
