Mark Ronson's Childhood with Michael Jackson: Re-examining the Past

British music producer Mark Ronson has opened up about a curious evening he spent with pop superstar Michael Jackson in a hotel room when Ronson was just 13 years old. The encounter, which Ronson has had to extensively re-examine following serious child abuse accusations against Jackson, forms a significant, albeit strange, memory from his youth.
Ronson's introduction to the "King of Pop" came through his friend Sean Lennon, the son of the legendary John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The sequence of events saw Michael Jackson spending time at Sean's residence, followed by Ronson attending the "Bad Tour" concert. The evening culminated in a large after-party held in Jackson's hotel room, a gathering of about 50 people.
During this memorable, if somewhat bizarre, after-party, Ronson distinctly recalls Jackson's peculiar fascination. "He was just obsessed with throwing these soggies out the window – like taking big mounds of toilet paper and making them damp and then throwing them at parked cars," Ronson recounted, acknowledging the oddity of the recollection even now. At that young age, Ronson was already deeply enamored with the studio environment and harbored ambitions of extracting a musical "hook" from the iconic singer. He hoped to leverage the meeting to "get something, get a song out of it," but unfortunately, he never managed to secure a melody from Michael Jackson.
Years later, as allegations of misconduct against Michael Jackson surfaced, Ronson was compelled to revisit and scrutinize his own experience with the pop icon. Despite the subsequent controversies, Ronson steadfastly maintains that his specific interaction on that particular night was entirely innocent. "Obviously with allegations that came later, of course it made me re-examine that event too many times," Ronson stated, adding, "I wouldn’t say it’s a highlight of my childhood, but it was certainly one of the most memorable experiences. And of course I put it back through that lens a hundred times. I was like, for whatever reason, there was nothing weird or untoward on that night."
The broader context of Ronson's childhood also involved his close friendship with Sean Lennon, whom he described as charismatic and carrying the powerful legacy of his father, John Lennon, who died when Sean was only five. Ronson even recalled a visit from Steve Jobs, who came to show Sean a new Apple computer. It is important to note that Michael Jackson consistently and strongly denied all allegations of misconduct made against him throughout his life.
