Manchester Rocked by Twin Storms Austen & Boelo: Flights Grounded, Trains Halted!

The United Kingdom is bracing for a tumultuous period of severe weather as two named storms, Austen and Boelo, are set to bring heavy rain and strong winds across various parts of the country. This comes alongside significant disruption to rail services at Manchester Airport due to a separate signalling issue, compounding travel woes for commuters and passengers.

Storm Austen initiated the severe weather on Friday, October 23, sweeping across the UK with powerful gusts. The Met Office issued an amber wind warning for Cornwall, Devon, and the Isles of Scilly, where winds were expected to reach up to 80mph in exposed coastal areas and high ground, with 60-70mph gusts more widely. A yellow wind warning was also in effect for Greater Manchester until 9pm on Friday evening. Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong warned of likely disruption, particularly to roads and railways, due to fallen branches and trees, as this marked the first stormy weather in the south of the UK this season. Other impacts included flying debris causing injuries and large waves along the coast.

Manchester Airport experienced considerable operational challenges on Friday due to these strong winds. Aircraft attempting to land were forced to circle, and some flights, such as MSR781 from Cairo, had to divert to other airports like London Gatwick after multiple failed landing attempts. Furthermore, around 2pm, numerous planes were waiting both to take off and to land, leading to significant delays for flights like VY8747 to Barcelona, FR3242 to Beziers, and TS207 to Toronto.

Adding to the travel difficulties, Manchester Airport also faced a major disruption to its rail services. A reoccurring signalling issue led to dozens of cancellations for Northern, Transport for Wales, and TransPennine Express services affecting trains to and from Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly on Friday, October 23. Disruption was expected to persist for the remainder of the day, with services to destinations like Crewe, Windermere, Barrow-in-Furness, and Holyhead being impacted. Ticket restrictions were lifted for affected passengers.

Following closely on Storm Austen’s heels, Storm Boelo is forecast to batter the UK on Saturday, October 24, and extend into Sunday, October 25. The Met Office issued a widespread yellow wind alert for the entire north of the UK, effective from 12pm on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday. This warning covers Scotland, North East England, North West England (including Greater Manchester, Blackburn, Blackpool, Cheshire, Cumbria, Halton, Lancashire, Merseyside, and Warrington), and Yorkshire. An amber wind warning, indicating higher confidence in impacts and disruption, was also issued for parts of North West England, specifically Cumbria, between 9pm Saturday and 9pm Sunday, with gusts potentially reaching 80mph. Chris Bulmer, Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, stated that Storm Boelo would bring strong winds and heavy rain to Northern Ireland, Scotland, and parts of northern England, with gusts of 70-80mph in exposed coastal areas and high ground, and 50-60mph more widely. These strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain and frequent showers, making for an impactful weekend.

For Greater Manchester, a detailed hourly forecast outlined the expected conditions. On Friday, October 23, temperatures ranged from highs of 11C to lows of 8C. Rain was heaviest between 3pm and 7pm, with lighter precipitation before and after, stopping around 10pm. Wind gusts peaked at 45mph around 5pm. On Saturday, October 24, temperatures were expected to reach highs of 13C and lows of 7C. Rain was anticipated throughout the day, with the heaviest periods occurring between 10am and 7pm. Wind gusts were forecast to reach highs of 47mph, peaking at 7pm. Residents were advised to stay updated with the developing forecasts due to the significant weather impacts.
