Man United's Wounds: Amorim Calls for Victories to Mend Last Season's Scars
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has candidly acknowledged that his players are still grappling with the lingering psychological impact of last season's disappointing campaign. As United prepares to face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, the team aims to secure back-to-back Premier League victories, a feat they have yet to achieve under Amorim's leadership. The recent 2-1 win over Chelsea offers a fresh opportunity to break this unwelcome streak.
Amorim emphasized that consistent wins are vital for his squad to overcome the 'trauma' of finishing 15th last season, during which they lost nearly half of their league matches. He noted that a shift in 'feeling' within the team would not require a long winning streak but rather the crucial second and third consecutive victories. The manager pointed out that some long-serving players still carry the burden of past struggles, and winning games is the only remedy for this pervasive sentiment.
While Manchester United has shown flashes of brilliance, particularly in their recent win against Chelsea and their opening-day performance against Arsenal, their inconsistency often surfaces against teams perceived as 'smaller'. Last season, the team notably secured victories over Manchester City and Arsenal and managed a draw against Liverpool at Anfield. Amorim has therefore urged his players to approach the Brentford match with the same intensity and focus they would apply to a top-six opponent, referencing the determination shown against Liverpool last year or at the start of the season against Arsenal.
The Portuguese coach stressed the importance of the team recognizing their current momentum and seizing the opportunity that lies before them. He reiterated that the responsibility to win the next game rests squarely on the players and the team as a whole, highlighting the critical juncture the club is at in understanding and leveraging its current position.
