Man City Soars to Top of EPL with West Ham Thrashing, Haaland Breaks Records
)
Manchester City secured a decisive 3-0 victory over West Ham on Saturday, propelling them to the top of the Premier League table, one point ahead of Arsenal who were yet to play. The impressive win, City's seventh in a row across all competitions, was highlighted by two goals from star striker Erling Haaland and a crucial strike from Tijjani Reijnders. Haaland drew first blood for City from close range early in the game, followed by Reijnders before halftime, and Haaland sealed the victory with his second goal in the 69th minute, solidifying City's dominant performance.
Despite the comfortable win, City manager Pep Guardiola expressed dissatisfaction with his team's performance, particularly regarding their play with the ball. Guardiola issued a stark warning, stating, "The way we played with the ball we have to improve. Otherwise, it will not be enough to arrive in March and April in contention to win titles." He even singled out captain Bernardo Silva for criticism, remarking, "Bernie is my weakness. He's top, but today Bernie had to play better. Today I'm not happy with Bernie." Guardiola emphasized that even though Silva possesses "a special sense to compete and play and incredible attributes in the bad moments to step up," his performance on the day was not up to standard.
Erling Haaland's two goals against West Ham were particularly significant, not only securing the win but also marking a remarkable personal milestone. These strikes brought his Premier League career tally to 104 goals, officially surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 103 goals in the competition. What makes this achievement even more astonishing is that Haaland reached this milestone in just 114 matches, dramatically fewer than Ronaldo's 236 appearances. This feat solidifies Haaland's position as one of the Premier League's most prolific and rapidly ascending goalscorers, having already become the fastest player to 50 and then 100 Premier League goals.
Haaland's relentless pursuit of goalscoring records continues to put him in contention with the Premier League's all-time greats. With 104 goals, he is swiftly climbing the ranks, aiming to eventually challenge Alan Shearer's monumental record of 260 goals. His current standing places him above many legendary figures. The current list of top Premier League scorers sees Haaland rising through the ranks: Alan Shearer (260), Harry Kane (213), Wayne Rooney (208), Mohamed Salah (190), Andrew Cole (187), Sergio Aguero (184), Frank Lampard (177), Thierry Henry (175), Robbie Fowler (163), Jermain Defoe (162), Michael Owen (150), Les Ferdinand (149), Teddy Sheringham (146), Jamie Vardy (145), Robin van Persie (144), Nicolas Anelka (131), Son Heung-Min (127), Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink (127), Robbie Keane (126), Dwight Yorke (123), Raheem Sterling (123), Dimitar Berbatov (121), Romelu Lukaku (121), Steven Gerrard (120), Ian Wright (113), Peter Crouch (112), Dion Dublin (111), Sadio Mane (111), Emile Heskey (110), Ryan Giggs (109), Paul Scholes (107), Darren Bent (106), Cristiano Ronaldo (103), Erling Haaland (104), Matt Le Tissier (100).
Beyond his goalscoring prowess, Haaland also made headlines with his choice of celebration. The Manchester City striker revived the iconic "Robot" celebration after scoring his goals against West Ham, a move he also displayed in a previous 3-1 win over Bournemouth. This celebration gained fame through former England striker Peter Crouch, who made it his trademark during his playing career, notably performing it in a pre-FIFA World Cup friendly in 2006. Crouch himself playfully acknowledged Haaland's adoption of the move, posting on social media, "I walked so they could run." Given Haaland's machine-like efficiency in front of goal, reminiscent of "The Terminator," the "Robot" celebration seems a fitting addition to his repertoire.
The match itself saw Manchester City return to full strength, making seven changes from the side that previously beat Brentford in the Carabao Cup. Key players in the lineup included Donnarumma, Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, O’Reilly, Nico, Bernardo (C), Reijnders, Foden, Cherki, and Haaland. West Ham, on the other hand, made three changes following their defeat at Aston Villa, with Kyle Walker-Peters, Max Kilman, and Ollie Scarles coming into the squad. The Citizens' continued dominance ensured they head into the festive season at the top of the Premier League table.
