Mahama speaks on impeachment threat during Opoku-Agyemang's absence

President John Dramani Mahama welcomed Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang back to Ghana at the Jubilee House on Thursday, May 22, 2025, following her health trip abroad. During a briefing at the presidency, President Mahama expressed his relief at her return, noting that her absence complicated his duties, including a trip to Togo that led to impeachment threats from the opposition.

"I particularly missed you, because even travelling out of the country has been difficult. They threatened to impeach me just for going to Togo while you were away," he said, eliciting laughter.

President Mahama also highlighted the success of the recently concluded 120-day social contract program, stating that the government delivered a significant portion of its promises to Ghanaians despite her absence, building on the foundation laid by Prof Opoku-Agyemang before her trip. "Everybody said you should’ve been there, but with all the work you did before you went, we continued, and I think we were able to present to the people of Ghana a significant percentage of the things that we had promised," he stated. He reassured the Vice President that Ghana is stable and on the right track and that her return is timely to continue the work she "so beautifully started."

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) had recently accused President Mahama of breaching Article 60 of the 1992 Constitution when he traveled to Togo while Professor Opoku-Agyemang was abroad for medical treatment, and Speaker Alban Bagbin was also reportedly out of the country. The Minority in Parliament accused the president of undermining the Constitution by leaving Ghana without a designated acting head of state and threatened impeachment proceedings against him for the alleged constitutional violation.
