Mahama Ayariga condemns military brutality in Bawku; urges immediate probe

Bawku Central Member of Parliament (MP), Mahama Ayariga, has condemned recent incidents of military brutality against civilians in the Bawku Municipality.

In a statement, the Minority Leader described the conduct of some military personnel as unacceptable, citing the destruction of a culturally significant statue.

Mr. Ayariga has called on the military high command to immediately investigate the incidents that occurred on Sunday, July 13.

“I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unacceptable act of destruction of the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, by some military personnel,” the statement read.

He also condemned the violent attack by unknown assailants on a vehicle being escorted by soldiers.

“The violent gun attack by unknown youth on the vehicle escorted by soldiers is equally condemned, and further attacks must cease,” he stated.

Mr. Ayariga urged the youth of Kusaug to remain calm and exercise restraint as the government steps in to address the situation.

He also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and those who suffered injuries as a result of the clashes.
