Mafi Kumase (V/R), June 11, GNA – The Reproductive and Child Health Unit of the Mafi Kumase Health Centre has become a death trap and needs urgent renovation.

This is because the ceiling of the office being used by the nurses has rotten and was peeling off.

Also, the shed under, which they attend to children and pregnant women was also leaking badly.

The GNA made the observation on Tuesday, when this reporter visited the facility to check if the facility was affected by the nationwide strike action by nurses and midwives.

As fate would have it, it was raining cats and dogs, when the GNA got there so it saw that the shed was flooded due to the leakage.

In that horrible situation, nurses at the unit were attending to a sick child, who was rushed there.

The GNA also observed that there were no chairs, so the nurses sat on a wooden bench before attending to the sick child.

One of the nurses told the GNA that the situation was not only annoying but also “dehumanising, disincentive and demoralizing.”

She noted that their lives and those of the people who visited the unit were at stake due to the rotten ceiling and woods, which could collapse anytime soon.

The nurse said sitting on the bench for a long time affected their spines, adding, “sometimes we have to lean on the wall for support.”

In another development nurses at the facility were at post despite the ongoing strike of the Ghana Registered Nurses Midwives Association.
