Striking GRNMA members are receiving threats - Volta/Oti Chairperson
By Edward Williams
Hohoe (V/R), June 10, GNA – Mr Courage Kumah, Volta/Oti Regional Chair of the Ghana Registered Nurses, and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has disclosed that some striking members of the Association in some health facilities in the regions were being threatened.
“We are also getting issues of the Ministry using the Director-General and Facility Coordinators such as medical staff, nurse managers and district directors to threaten people to come back to work.
“That if they don’t return to work, they would not validate them and all those things.”
Mr Kumah speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) disclosed that the Association was taking steps including an online reporting system to collate responses from the striking nurses and midwives being threatened.
He said some facilities where cases of threats were received included the Ho Teaching Hospital, Volta Regional Hospital, Hohoe, Ho Municipal Health Directorate, Nkwanta North District Health Directorate, and some Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) such as the Comboni and St Anthony Hospital.
Mr Kumah said the strike action in the Volta and Oti regions had been successful and “getting better by day.”
A GNA visit to the Out-patient Department (OPD) of the Volta Regional Hospital, Hohoe saw some patients being attended to by ‘auxiliary staff.’
Mr Kumah lamented the use of such staff including IT officers, Health Information Officers and first-year nursing students to replace striking members at health facilities who took patients’ vitals.
He said the auxiliary staff were not trained in that regard hence their acts would “toil with the lives of Ghanaians across the country and the regions.”
Mr Kumah said the Association would remain on strike until their demands met, adding that their legal teams were also working on the issues of threats and that was why they were taking absolute data.
The GRNMA strike began in phases on June 2, 2025, escalated on June 9 with a complete withdrawal of services.
The Association is protesting the delayed implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement, which governs salaries, allowances, and working conditions.
